Section 5 - Welder's protection

General
With the WELDLINE brand, SAF-FRO offers a wide
range of personal protective equipment selected
for the welder and his environment.
Our range of welders personal protective equipment
combines safety, quality and comfort for all welding

HEAD PROTECTION

The complete range of protective

products for the head includes:
Hand shields,
Conventional helmets,
Liquid crystal helmets.
All hand shields and helmets comply
with European standard EN 175
(Filters for eye protection used in
welding and similar operations).

EYE PROTECTION

EAR PROTECTION
Choice criteria : goggles are mainly
used to protect the eyes against
harmful rays from oxy-fuel gas welding
or cutting and mechanical particles
(grinding).

CAUTION:
For all welding and cutting applications,
we strongly recommend using eye
protection that complies with EN 169 or
EN 379 for protection against harmful
electric arc radiation.

72

State regulations dene the

obligations of employers with regards
to noise protection.
Employers are legally obliged to
provide personal protection to workers
exposed to sound levels higher than
85 dBA/day or peak levels of 135 dB.
The employer must also set up a program
providing collective safety measures.
To help in this task, SAF-FRO has chosen
a range of personal safety equipment
(ear plugs that comply with EN 352-2).
adapted to the specic needs of the
welder and the welding environment.

0254-040

Verify that the product conforms with

EN standards (CE marking mandatory).
Main EN Standards are EN 166 for basic
conditions and EN 169 for welding lters

applications: oxy-acetylene welding/cutting,

plasma cutting, MMA, TIG, MIG/MAG and others.
SAF-FRO has selected personal protective equipment that
comply with regulations and standards applicable to welder
safety, to offer the best possible protection.

HANDS PROTECTION

Hands are undoubtedly the most

exposed part of the body and can
be the least protected due to lack of
appropriate equipment or negligence.
Nearly 40% of work-related accidents
leading to absence involve the hands and
upper limbs.
Well aware of this problem, SAF-FRO
has selected a range of welding gloves
appropriate for various applications,
combining performance, protection and
optimum comfort for welders hands.
Welding gloves standards
Standard EN 420 denes the general
requirements for gloves (dexterity,
safeness, pH, chrome content, size).
All EC-certied gloves meet these
requirements.
In addition, welding gloves are
generally subject to two specic
standards, EN 388 and EN 407.
The EN 12477 standard standard
combines all the tests of the EN 388 and
most of those of the EN 407 in order to
install a unique standard for welding
gloves (with a minimal length of 350 mm
for the size 10.
These standards evaluate the product
performance level after several tests.
The higher the number, the better
the product performed in testing;
an X means that the glove was not
subjected to the test.

BODY PROTECTION

EN 388: relative
to mechanical properties
A - Abrasion resistance (0 to 4)
B - Blade cut resistance (0 to 5)
C - Tear resistance (0 to 4)
D - Puncture resistance (0 to 4)
EN 407: relative
to thermal properties
A - Burning resistance (1 to 4)
B - Contact heat resistance
(1 to 4)
C - Convective heat resistance
(1 to 4)
D - Radiant heat resistance (1 to 4)
E - Resistance to small splashes of
molten metal (1 to 4)
F - Resistance to large splashes of
molten metal (1 to 4)
EN 12477: protection gloves
for welding
A - Abrasion resistance (0 to 4)
B - Blade cut resistance (0 to 5)
C - Tear resistance (0 to 4)
D - Puncture resistance (0 to 4)

Standard EN 340
Denes the general requirements that
must be met for any garment to bear
the CE mark (ergonomics, wear, size,
marking, manufacturers information).
Standard EN ISO 11612
Protective clothing for workers
exposed to heat and ames (not
including welders and reghters).
This means that the wearer is protected
against brief contact with a ame and
against (a limited amount of) convective
and radiant heat. ISO 11612 is scheduled
to replace EN 531.
Standard EN 1149-5
Protective clothing Electrostatic
properties Part 5: performance
requirements
Antistatic clothing suppresses static
charge, thereby preventing sparks,
which might cause a re or explosions.
EN 1149-5 is part of a larger sytem.

A - Burning resistance (1 to 4)
B - Contact heat resistance

The ZEPHYR air ow system

Air ow system: 2 ows rates
(low 160 l/min and high 200 l/min).
This equipment includes an
indication of the ow chosen,
an indication of the battery
charge, and two alarms in case
of ow insufciency: a tone and
a vibration. This is important for
the welder who is often in a noisy
environment. A specic system
sends the tone through the hose
to bring the sound to the welder.
The belt as well as the shoulder
strap are made in ame retardant
material, a big advantage also.
The belt includes a cushion to
ensure a high comfort level.
Disconnecting the battery is easy
with only one button to push. It is
a lithium battery with a 8-hour
lifetime duration. A stronger one
can be put in place for special
cases with 14-hour duration
5% (on request). No need to fully
discharge the Li-Ion battery before
recharging it.

Opening the lter is simple by

turning a quarter to the left.
Two symbols indicate if it is locked
or open, this is also indicated inside
the lter box.
Inside, 3 kinds of lters can be
included.
- One pre lter against the biggest
particles
- One particle lter against the dust
(> 0.3 micron)
- One carbon lter against the fume,
odour.
The whole system is water proofed

Hose connection and hose cap

The connection between the ow system and the
helmet is via the hose. The connection with
the air ow system is water proof. The helmet includes
a quick connection allowing exibility when the welder
moves his head. The hose is protected with an outer
covering (75% cotton, 25% Kevlar).

For length over 10 meters, the section has to be increased.
For secondary cable, the European directive (2006/95/EC-low voltage directive) imposes
the conformity to one of these two standards. It means that for safety reasons (resistance to
welding hot projections), PVC cables must not be used as welding cables, as they do not meet
the standards' requirements.

Cleaning, polishing and marking of stainless steel
OPTICLEAN
New inverter-technology installation
for cleaning, polishing and marking
of stainless steel.
Characteristics:
Includes a torch with a manual pump and
liquid cleaning hose inserted onto the
torch itself.
Operates with alternating current only
(electronic current control) "Inverter"
technology.

2008-753

2008-835

Benets:
Operators no longer have to dip the pump
into the liquid to clean the piece and
therefore it is not necessary to interrupt
the operation several times (increased
productivity).
There is no longer any risk of ruining the
metal if the torch accidentally touches the
workpiece.

Additional advantages:
If, instead, you usually apply cleaning gel or paste.
AESTHETICAL ADVANTAGE: does not leave stains on the steel. Cleaning gel or paste,
can leave stains as they are very aggressive.
ECOLOGICAL ADVANTAGE: does not produce toxic water requiring treatment, as the
workpiece is cleaned with a damp cloth. In the traditional solution, for every metre of weld at least
5 litres of water have to be used to eliminate the cleaning solutions on the work piece.
This water becomes toxic and must be treated in very expensive treatment plants. Failure to
observe the law is a criminal offence.
LOGISTIC ADVANTAGE: large outdoor areas are not required for cleaning as use of the machine
does not generate toxic vapour emissions or the need for water treatment plant. Being toxic, gel or
paste must not be used in closed areas in order to prevent the risk of inhaling harmful vapours.

2008-754

ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE: It is not necessary to passivate after cleaning with OPTICLEAN.

Cleaning with gel or paste, requires a further passivation phase in order to reconstruct the
chromium layer weakened through cleaning. If the passivation phase is not performed, the steel
will no longer be stainless in the areas where welding and cleaning were performed.
