What you have learned about your writing?

Drafting was a big part that I learned about I usually just write a draft and then I dont
have anyone look at it. Ill go back and make few changes. I think what helps me is when
I have someone look at it. I think peer review helps me see things that I wouldnt notice
myself. Its also nice to get ideas and suggestions from other people.
Another thing I learned is that I add extra words in sentences. These extra words tend to
make the sentence not as strong as it could be. In some cases, it makes my writing sound
less academic.
Organization was an aspect in which I learned more about as well. I think before I would
try to use outlines but it usually wouldnt work because of all the ideas. Then I just
started writing as a draft without any outlines or anything. This made me realize that
some of my thoughts and ideas are scattered in the paper. I learned that with heading I
can organize everything better.
How your writing has improved?
My writing has improved in a lot of different ways. I now spend more time revising my
work and thinking about my writing in different ways. I think about what I want my
readers to get from my writing. Since I learned about my problem with adding words, my
writing now sounds more academic when I need it to. Overall, I think my writing has
significantly improved over the semester. I now notice the changes when I put more effort
into my writing.
How you will apply what you have learned in future classes?
I think this class really set me up to do well in other classes. Looking back to last
semester I think about all the papers I had to write and knowing what I know now it all
could have been better. One of the main things that will benefit me in other classes is
being able to look at different conversations in writing. Also, I think I will be better at
integrating sources. Then from analyzing and synthesizing to adding my own
contribution in.
What you will continue to work on to improve your writing?
I will continue to work on my sentences structure. If I pay more attention to that it will
help me with my problem of adding words. I think if I continue to use the things I learned
in this class over the semester, then that will also improve my writing. If I dont continue
to do what I learned, then my writing will go back to the way it used to be.
Describe three or four concrete ways in which your writing has improved. Find an example of
your writing from early in the semester that you can compare to your later work. Explain what
about the more recent example is an improvement over the first. Discuss the process you went
through to develop your writing in these particular ways.
A couple ways my writing has improved is by sentence structure, synthesis, paper structure, and
citation. With sentence structure, like previously mentioned before, I add words that make my
writing sound less academic. An example would be from my Synthesis 2 paper: With training the
faculty and staff it teaches them how to help with allegations of sexual assault. If I just take out
the words with and it the sentence sounds more academic. Here is an example from my first
paper of using sources to back up my writing: Basically, universities are functioning
increasingly as an industry with fluctuating, predominantly economic goals and market-oriented
values (Kezar 2004). Here is an example from my final paper: An article from the Journal of
American College Health mentions, National Sexual Victimization of College Women study

that surveyed 4,446 college women found that almost 9% of the women experienced unwanted
sexual contact within an academic year (Krebs, Warner, Lindquist, Fisher, Martin, 2010). I think
that the way I use sources in my final paper is so much better than my first paper. The way I
integrate sources has improved a lot. I know how to set up a quote from an article better than I
did when I first started using sources. To develop my writing in this way I think that I looked into
the readings we had about source integration. I also think that peer reviews helped me and just
what we went over in class.

Explain how you will apply what you have learned in future classes. Yes, this exercise is a bit
hypothetical, but this college course is designed to benefit you in all of your coursework, so it is
important for you to consider how your new skills might apply in future educational scenarios.
The main thing that I learned from that I will apply to future classes is synthesis. I feel like that
skill will help in future class when I have to combine other peoples ideas in a conversation. I
think that the tone of my writing has improved. With that it will help me in future classes, so that
my writing sounds more academic. Research and citation is a big concept that I can use in future
classes. In most classes research will be done, and this class helped me know what sources are
reliable. I learned how to find reliable sources through different sites and search tools I believe
that I learned a lot about integrating sources in my writing. Overall, I think that theres a lot that I
learned that I can use in future classes. I have to continue what I learned, so I dont go back to
old habits.
