CONCEPT OR PRINCIPLE

Flowers are adapted for Pollination by Insects and Wind so that the male and female gametes can
be brought together for fertilization.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

ACTIVITIES

Introduction:
Engagement - Teacher shows students a video on pollination (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=1ZnOvqzu3Zc) and asks students to determine what the big idea is.
Students are expected to realize that the big idea is that for Pollination to occur insects and wind is
needed so that all life can continue.
Students are asked what they think pollination is and why it is important.
Students are asked if they think all plants are pollinated the same way.
Teacher says that today you are going to learn about the different ways that flowers are pollinated as
well as how these flowers are adapted for pollination.

Development: Social Interaction Model / Group Work


Exploration Teacher projects two pictures depicting self and cross pollination and asks students what
they think is happening and why.
Teacher uses students to represent flowers, to demonstrate self and cross pollination
Students are then put into groups and are given two flowers, one insect pollinated and one wind
pollinated, as well as a hand lens. They are asked to observe and record the differences between the two
flowers. They are also asked to think about why these flowers have the features they do.
Explanation Students present their findings and explanations.
Teacher further explains the importance of the functions of the different features of insect and wind
pollinated flowers.

Elaboration - Students work in groups of two, observe 5 pictures of flowers(labelled A-E) and are
asked to determine whether they are insect or wind pollinated and why.

Consolidation:
EvaluationStudents are then given a work sheet to complete containing a fill in the blank exercise.

Teacher ask student to exchange papers to correct worksheet.
