Unit/Theme: Four Corners Region
Lesson Topic: History of Fort Lewis
State Standards: Social Studies Standard 1- Describe the history, interaction, and
contribution of the various peoples and cultures that have lived in or migrated to a community or region
WIDA Standards: English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts
necessary for academic success in the content area of Social Studies
Content Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to
create a Venn diagram comparing native students experiences in school
with theirs.
Language Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will understand
the vocabulary culture values, unfairness and move and incorporate it
into their venn diagram.
Key Vocabulary: culture values, unfairness, change and growth
Supplementary Materials: Venn diagram worksheet
Higher Order Questions: How would you feel if you were one of the native
Americans living at Fort Lewis.

Motivation:
What do you know about the history of Fort Lewis?
Presentation:
Practice and Application:
1. Start by having one student read the learning target.
2. Speak gibberish to the class and get mad when they do
not do what I am trying to get them to do.
3. Ask them how did that make you feel if I was your
teacher and I talked like that all the time.
4. Explain how the Fort used to be a Native American
boarding school before it became a college
5. Explain how the Native Americans were treated
6. Explain how in 1891 it become a boarding school and was
located in Hesperus, 1911 the state bought the land and it
promised Native Americans free tuition. In 1956 moved to

where it is now. For each step I will show pictures.


7. Have a quick class discussion on how their schooling
experience compares to what the Native Americans faced.

Review and Assessment:


I will do a fist to five to see how well they understand the vocabulary. A
formal formative assessment will be to check the Venn Diagrams.
