Over the Line Softball

Lesson Objectives:
By the end of the lesson students will be able to exhibit responsible game play as well as properly
record hits and runs for over the line softball.
Organization
Squads for fitness (predetermined in the beginning of the semester)
Teams for game play (predetermined at the beginning of the unit)
Formal Assessment/Evidence of Mastery:
Students will be filling out their own score sheets that will be assessed by both teams playing as well
as the teacher to check for understanding of proper scoring.

Needed equipment and Set-up:


1 batting tee for each of four fields
5 numbered squad cones
5 cones to designate field sidelines and line to hit
over
One bucket of gloves for left-handed throwers
Four buckets, each containing:
5 gloves for right-handed throwers
1 bat
1 softball
WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ENCOURAGE PA BEYOND THE LESSON?
Students have previously been told that this is a great beach activity as well as can be played at any
park with a small amount of people.
CLASS MANAGEMENT:
Student grouping mgmt.:
Students already have their designated squads for warm-ups as well as their teams.
Equipment mgmt.:
Equipment will be set up ahead of time. Students will be responsible for getting their equipment from
the proper place as well as making sure that it is all put back where it is supposed to be.
Mgmt. routines:
Students are expected to sit in squads for roll call and for the warm-up activities.
When the whistle blows, students are expected to be quiet with eyes on the teacher holding any
equipment they may have.
CONTENT SEQUENCE:

Introductory Activity/Warm-up segment:


Jog to the squad cones. Introduction of student leader.
Fitness Development segment: Up & Backs
The student leader for the day will call out what locomotor movement is next from a card. Squad 5
will call go when it is the next groups turn to move.
Game ContentTeams of 3 to 5 players
Batting:
Batting team hit off the tee
2 attempts per time up to bat
Any ball landing past the line and within the sidelines without being caught = a hit
In an inning, once you team has 2 hits, every hit after that = a run
Any ball landing past the last fielder = a homerun ( a maximum of 3 runs can be scored from
a homerun
Outs:
3 outs per inning per team
Any fly ball caught = an out
Ball hitting the line of the triangle or landing within the triangle = 1 attempt
Batter swings and misses = 1 attempt
Foul ball = 1 attempt

I like that your team was able to mark down all your hits but remember that your runs do not start
until your third hit.
Closure/Lesson Summary:
Everyone worked really hard and showed great team spirit throughout this unit. Lets crown our
winners and cheer for them doing such a great job. The winning team can choose someone to lead
our class cheer.
