Literacy Lesson Plan

Literacy Lesson Plan for Beginning Reader:

The student I am creating this lesson plan for is a beginner reader at reading level E. She has concept of word
and cannot read silently on her own. Read alouds are going to be the primary source of comprehension work,
and comprehension will make up twenty percent of the childs reading diet. Fluency will be the largest portion
of instructional time coming in at forty percent of reading diet. Finally, word study and writing will each be
twenty percent of instructional time as well.

Diet:
Fluency
Learning Objectives:
Objective
To develop the childs (a) oral
reading accuracy, (b) comfort with
reading out loud, and (c) reading
rate.
(Objective is from PALS 1-3
fluency)

Standard of Learning
1.6 The student will apply phonetic
principles to read and spell.
1.7 The student will use semantic
clues and syntax to expand
vocabulary when reading.

Materials needed:
o Book: Dont Panic! By Helen Depree

Time for this part of lesson:

o 12 minutes will be spent on portion

Procedure:

Assessment
Assessment will be done by
listening to the child rereading the
book and keeping a running record.

o Teacher and child will do a picture walk through the book, initially, allowing the child to discuss
what they think is going on by only looking at pictures.
o Then, the child will read the book on their own. The teacher can provide help with words, if
needed. The teacher should take notes during this portion.
o Finally, the child will read the book a second time on their own without help from the teacher.
The teacher will take notes on what they see.
o Afterwards, the teacher will discuss any issues the child has with words or concepts in the book.

When the word study portion of the day starts, the teacher will pull out this sight word version of
Jenga. The children will set the game up, and they will begin pulling blocks out of the tower.
When they pull a block out of the tower, they are given the opportunity to read the sight word.
The teacher should make note on her running record about the words the child knows
immediately and the words the child hesitates on.
