Introduction:
Introduce the lesson.
Today, we are going to learn about how we can use our five senses to
describe popcorn.
Information Giving:
What is a descriptive word?
The definition of a descriptive word is a word that tells us how an object
looks, sounds, smells, taste, and feels. (Our five senses)
Discuss the five senses and read about them in the book I Love Popcorn while
the students are sitting at the carpet.
Review the parts of the book.
Ask the students to identify the front cover, back cover, spine, and title
page.
Check for Understanding:
Display each sense on a separate piece of chart paper and tape on the board.
Look
Smell
Sound
Feel
Taste

Ask the students

Show and tell the body part we use for each sense.
Have the students point and say (repeat) the body part we use for each
sense.
Guided Practice:
Lets pop some popcorn together!
Explore the five senses by observing popcorn pop.
First observe the
Look of the kernel before it is cooked
Smell of the butter as it heats up
Sound of the popcorn popping one kernel verses a bunch of kernels
Then observe the
Pass a bowl around and direct students to take ONE PIECE. Tell the
students later they will receive a bowl of popcorn at their desk.
Look at what the kernel changed to
Feel the popcorn
Taste the popcorn
Lets create some charts with some descriptive words!
Now that we have experienced popcorn popping, let us complete the chart
paper with descriptive words.
Independent Practice:
On your own
Students will choose a word from the charts and write their own
descriptive sentence using the stem/prompt.
Students will color and decorate their own popcorn bag to take some
popcorn home to share our lesson with their families.

Closure:
Review the topic of the five senses and how they help us use descriptive words.
Review each of our five senses. Have some students share their sentences to
the class.
Fill each bag with a scoop of popcorn and discuss how they can share what they
learned with their families.

Extension:
The student can write more descriptive sentences.
Im Done:
Students will have the option to:
1. Read a book from their box.
2. Write in their free journal.
Homework:
NONE
Accommodations:
1. The student can be given a sensory break to work at the carpet with a
