Victoria & albert museum
Visit the Victoria and Albert Museum and make an observational drawing of the objects. Draw the object from any
perspective and it should be an observational drawing not
from a photograph. Note down its title, date it was made,
who made it and its materials. Write a reflection on how
it developed your understanding of design and designing
objects with a personal experience.

Joseph Edgar Boehm 1875-80

Eurydice
Marble

The common aspect of the sculptures Ive chosen is that it displays little details of its
textures and its appearances. The exquisiteness of how the texture is presented in the
hair and the clothes of the sculpture shows how the artist has thought a lot about how to
create these pieces. All three are created using different materials - Oak, Portland stone and
Marble. What I have realized from this is that what artists want to express cannot be and
should not be a problem of what material they use. What I have believed before is that the
material can be an obstacle for producing a perfect art piece to express the details however,
exploring different sculptures made from various materials communicated that materials
isnt an excuse to produce a perfect piece. I was amused of the details and the style of each
sculptures, it seemed that the artist knew everything before he/she even started creating,
as if the blueprint of the building was all set and done before collecting materials to build a
house.

02
Gaffa Tape and Cardboard
Create 3D sketch of an artefact that relate to your
interest. List objects and explore its potentials.
Construct 1:1 scale model of an object using cardboard and Gaffa tape only. This will extend the thinking
process and produce the object into a tangible form.

I have chosen a cap as my object as it

is a daily use item that is wearable. Before constructing the model, Ive made
few sketches in different perspectives
and measured the object. Made a small
model with paper to make sure the
blueprint plan worked.
Idea to make a cap from this website.

PROCESS

11

I had faced some difficulties cutting cardboard due to its thickness. When I tried to cut
it in straight line with a scissor, the cardboard was so stiff that it either got folded or
wouldnt cut in straight lines. I have tried with a knife to cut it however; the edges were
not clean since the knife wasnt sharp enough.
I have realized that Ive got the measurements wrong in the process when I produced
my outcome. The cap resulted in a smaller scale than I expected, I have made mistakes in
writing down the write measurements.
Covering the cardboard with black Gaffa tape made the outcome more stable and I was
able to get the shape out of it. As the object has curves in its shape and cardboard is a flat
material, it was hard to produce the curve but when I covered it with the tape, I was able
to get the curve without any shape edges.
The shape of the cap turned out pretty successful then I expected. Ive thought that cardboard is a material that is stiff and not flexible so it would be hard to make a curved shape
but the gaffa tape was strong enough to hold it in place.

03
A Process
Research one process that was used to make a part of
already designed object. Write a 5minutes presentation
including questions like - what is this process used for?
Environmentally sustainable? When, who, why was it
invented?
Then write a report about all the processes from the
peers and also reflect upon it.

The Making of the Chanel Bicolour Cardigan

First, chooses the colour of the finest cashmere threads and using the machine,
it produces the basic shape of a cardigan. Cut into shapes and hand stitches the
details of different coloured threads surfaces. Uses the wooden ruler to measure the
exactness, finish it with C buttons.
It is a process of making something wearable. Chanels cashmere is produced in
Hawick, Scotland. Chanels Bicolour cardigan is the representative garment in the
brand therefore it produces different coloured cardigans. Chanel is well known for producing unique and high quality garments and it is still producing them as still many of
the people are interested in purchasing the cardigan.

Watching the process video of producing guitar was new and interesting. It involved very delicate
process to produce each part of guitar and the sound checking by craftsman was an important part
of the process. Since the quality of the guitar is determine by the sound that it makes, checking
the sound for each step is considered an essential part of guitar making process. In addition, it was
breath-taking to see every step was handmade from carving wood to combining the strings on guitars. The last part of the video showed the process of checking sound from the string and tuning the
guitar. The transition from just carving wood to an instrument was amazing.
We are more exposed to the finished outcome than the processes, even solving math equations we
seek for the answer rather than the process of getting the answers. Therefore we are unlikely to know
or be familiar about the process of producing the objects. They all require great amount of skills and
time to finish with a good quality. Especially the handmade ones are more valuable as the craftsmans time and effort was put into it. I have realized that in order to know its own value, we have to
look at the process not only the finished products.

Molding, Casting and
reproducing for production
Find an object that has been molded. Draw 3D drawing
of what the mold for the object looks like in your opinion. Press the object into moldmaking material clay
or Bluetac to copy the shape. Mix plaster and water
together and pour it into the mold you produced and
wait for it to set.

17

My object was a perfume bottle. I had chunk of clay for my object to be pressed on and it duplicated the shape of the perfume bottle on the clay. When I was pressing it, I covered plastic wrap
around my object from getting it dirty since the clay was sticky. As I expected, the shape had been
perfectly been shown on the moldmaking material. Then I mixed up the plaster with water 2:1 ratio until the liquid was thick, I poured the plaster on to the clay. In order to get smooth surfaces, I
tapped the clay so that the bubbles would escape from the plaster.
18

PROCESS

19

The final outcome is pretty satisfying as the shape of the object

is definite. The object itself has a
oval shape at the bottom therefore, the line is not as crisp. The
lines on the surface are from the
plastic wrap that I covered when
pressing onto the clay to avoid
the object from getting clay all
over. The plastic wrap also helped
to pull out the mold easily without any troubles.

Making Machines
Machines are objects that carry out a process.
Write a first person description of the act and the process
of the situation with no machine in it in detail. Then create
a machine that enables, stops or change the act from the
situation. Make a simple sketch and the instruction on how
to use the machine. Reflect and analyse the process and
the final outcome.

21

Situation description

I decided to go to Tesco to do some food shopping. I had to take the tube in

order to get there because the bus took too long and it was not in a walking
distance. I bought some food and drinks and was ready to go back home. When
I was walking up the stairs to the tube station, I was hardly balancing myself
because the bags were too heavy. My arms were hurting and it was really hard
to get up the stairs.
Simply to carry heavy things up the stairs without carrying it with both hands,
there would be a luggage carrier next to the stairs to carry only the luggage.

22

1. Place your luggage inside the box provided to transfer your bags up the stairs
2. Press the button before walking up the stairs
3. Grab your luggage when reaching the top
23

Machines are produced to make human lives more convenient. As it is noted on

the brief, anything that carries out a process can be called a machine.
As I faced this problem in real life, I believe that other people do as well.
By creating this machine, this should change the situation to a more
comfortable life. There is an elevator for alternatives if you are carrying heavy
load however, we pretty much face those uncertain moments when it is too
little to get an elevator and too heavy to walk up the stairs. Therefore, this
machine only carries the load up the stairs and all we have to do is to pick it up
on the top of the staircase.
Certainly there are people who would rather take the elevator than use this
machine however; there are people who want to take the stairs for quick
exercise or perhaps for their diet plan. But carrying the heavy bags for both
hands will annoy them so I believe this machine would become handy in this
situation.

06
Making Things felt
Create one artefact for each of the senses within a certain
situation. The senses can be combined or separated, include the stimulus of the situation and how it is going to
be used. Write your intention and then create a kit that
involves the experience for each sense.

25

To experience all the 5 senses, we had a trip towards New Cross Station and created a table
with anything that triggered our senses then rated the level from weak to strong.
26

This 5 senses kit is created mainly towards basketball players in high school or college. The intentions should be
able to form connection between the readers since the situation is most likely be a similar experience.

Blanket
Feeling something soft and warm triggers comfort and helps to calm down for getting ready for a match.
When you have a game to compete and you are tensed up, feeling the warmth and the softness will help to
calm you down.

Mascot
The use of character ease-up the tension and provide entertainments.
Looking at the performances by the mascot of each team will be a fun activity as well as to become determine to win for the team.

Chocolate bar
To taste sweetness triggers a hormone to get happy, fulfils the hunger and provides energy.
Eating sweets with your teammates and share fun stories or experiences.

Sweat
Triggers negative responses from people for its nasty smell.
Smelling combined sweats in the bus annoys people, making them wanting to get some fresh air.

Cheering
Triggers the excitement and determination to play well in the game.
When hearing cheers from the people makes them more confident and relaxed when competing with the
other team.

Making Things understood

Task 1.
In pairs, choose a point on the map and guide one person who is blindfolded to the destination. Then swap the blindfold person on the way back,
make sure you describe their surrounding when guiding.
Task 2.
Create a walking tour from one point to another for someone else. It should
include rich information such as personal feelings, opinions and observations etc. Write a first person description and then record a walking tour.
Exchange the recording with another person and give feedbacks.

28

Task 1
25. Richard Hoggart Building
32. Library
On the way to the library didnt go
smoothly in fact, it was pretty unstable.
The way was very familiar to us since
we pass it everyday however, taking
someone who is blindfolded just by
explanation was challenging. She nearly fell over by mis-stepping the stairs,
hands flounder in the air and hitting
somebody by accident, bump against
the walls and raising our voices to each
other etc. However, on our way back to
the RHB, it was much smoother as we
found the appropriate way to explain it
to the other person. It was a very spectacular and adventurous process.
29

Task 2

30

Feedback from Nara

It was pretty challenging to guide somebody when they are blindfolded. I tend to explain the
route assuming that the person knows where they are heading to however, in reality they dont.
Also when I was blindfolded, I felt very insecure and unstable since one of my sense was lacking.
Therefore I tend to concentrate on the other senses such as hearing and touching.
The activity of guiding map through audio recording that includes feelings, opinions and observation of the person was interesting. What they asked me to do was very fun and their way of explanation was quite different from me. One problem I figured from my feedback was that the scale of the
footsteps differ from people to people therefore, it is not always necessarily right for everyone.

Making Digital
The exercise was done to
obtain skills for manipulating
forms for the use in manufacture
and graphic applications using
computers. Using the online 3D
modelling site called Thinkercad,
we were given a specific shape to
create into 3D.

32

Computer Aided Design (CAD) is rapidly increasing in its popularity as the design
using the technology is developing day by day and it shows the potential outcome
from our imagination. It is very convenient since it is quick and easy to create a 3D
model out of simple drawings, especially the Tinkercad website is designed for the beginners to use it easily.
Tinkercad is a website to create 3D models online from a 2 dimensional drawings.
When producing something in 3D, the drawings from different perspectives and the
measurements should exist in order to produce it into 3 dimensional models. The website has basic shapes to drag on to the grid and alter the measurements of the shape
and its location.
Ive first dragged a ruler then placed squares as it is shown in the drawings. Then the
altered the measurements to make sure it were identical to the drawings. Ive checked
the view of the front, side and top to make sure the shapes were in the right position
where they should be.

33

PROCESS

34

It wasnt my first time using Tinkercad so it was pretty familiar for me to use the website.
At first, the perspective drawings confused me on how to create the model however, I
quickly got a grasp when I got the measurements right. The image looks like the shape
is very simple nevertheless, when creating it, it was more complicated then it looks. I
had to consider all three dimensions simultaneously when adding a square or changing
the measurements.
When I was familiar with making simple shapes, I moved on to make more complex
shapes. This time, I used the inspector tool to make the holes into shapes.
