Reflection:
HN and RR are both fourth graders and have a learning disability. We have been
working on refining their reading skills through the Corrective Reading Curriculum. It
is a curriculum that uses direct instruction. It is not the most engaging way of
teaching two fourth graders, I have found, but I have instilled a point system for my
students where they earn points for different prizes. This motivates them to work
hard even though it is not the most exciting. It has been fun to see the progress
they have made since I began working with them in January.
During our time together, other students from their class will come in to give them
their snack, so there may be a pause in the lesson. I try to find a spot in the lesson
when they are doing independent work or I am correcting their end of lesson
assessment where they can eat their snack. That doesnt always happen, however,
so bear with me when they read and answer questions with food in their mouth.
The girls and I have a lot of fun! I enjoy having conversations with them and hearing
their stories and interests.
Lesson Goals/Standards:
HNWhen given grade level text, HN will read aloud at a rate of at least 100 words per
minute using her knowledge of sigh words and her phonics skills, 2 of 3 trials during
a nine week period.
RRWhen given a short passage at grade level, Ruth will read the passage and answer
questions about the main idea 3 of 5 per nine weeks period.
When given grade level text, Ruth will read aloud with at least 100 words per
minute with at least 95% accuracy, 3 data samples per nine weeks period.
Lesson Objectives:
HNWhen given a list of 10 words with long vowel/consonant/silent e, HN will read the
isolated words with at least 70% accuracy for 2 or 3 trials during a nine week
period.
When given a list of 10 r-controlled words, HN will read the isolated words with at

Contextual Factors/Learner Characteristics:

The Resource room, at any given time, can have up to nine students with varying
needs as well as up to four paraprofessionals, one behavior specialist, one special
education teacher, and myself. During this half hour period, there will be 2-4
students, including HN and RR, in the room. There will also be the special education
teacher, 1-2 paraprofessionals, and myself. The room itself contains a Smartboard
as well as several iPads to serve as teaching tools or incentives. There are also
curriculum options to assist with the varying students needs.
A The Lesson
1 Introduction (5 minutes)
HN and RR will come to the resource room on their own and go to the
table where we work. Their student book and a pencil will be waiting
for them. They will usually have some story to tell me about something
that happened the night before or that morning. When they are
through, I will direct their attention to the lesson for the day. We may
be in the middle of a lesson due to time restraints, so we will begin
where we left off. I dont have much of an introduction because the
lessons are so similar that the students know what to expect.

Content Delivery (18 minutes)

Following the Corrective Reading Curriculum lesson, the teacher will
begin by reading the script and following through with the activities in
the teacher book.
The students will follow instructions given from the teacher in order to
earn points. Their student book correlates to the teacher book.
When the lesson is completed, the students will complete two reading
checkouts, one that will be timed, and complete the worksheet lesson.

Closure (4 minutes)
Teacher will correct the assessment; discuss any errors, especially
repeated; tally points; and reward any prizes if the students would like
to redeem their points.

B Assessments Used:

C Differentiated Instruction:

This lesson would be difficult to differentiate because it is structured as a

direct instruction type of lesson.
