Being the only child and a male in the Hmong culture, in which my family follows the
culture and religion of Shamanism strictly, has many expectations. Although my family is strict
about our religion it only applies toward actual events that requires the practice. A male in the
Hmong culture is expected to know how to speak and act toward other individuals while out at
events. When the event involved physical labor the people there, both male and female, are
expected to work with the host to prepare the event.
These were the expected outcomes for children once they have grown up. They were
difficult to become acquainted with because of the transition between a child with no
responsibility and a grown-up with responsibilities. During these events you meet other
individuals that are going through the same process and are having the same troubles. After a
few years experiencing the change, the responsibilities become innate whenever I go out to
gatherings and help is needed.
