Lesson one Day one
Topic: New Orleans History Lesson Plan

Objectives:
Students identify the significant events in New Orleans history and the effects they had on the
state, country, and world.
GLEs:
6.1.1 Produce clear and coherent writing for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences
by:
o Conducting historical research
o Evaluating a broad variety of primary and secondary sources
o Comparing and contrasting varied points of view
o Determining the meaning of words and phrases from historical texts
o Using technology to research, produce, or publish a written product

Using Prezi, the students will create a presentation depicting what they have learned about
New Orleans history. They will gather information for this presentation through completing a
directive browsing activity with a partner. The teacher will give specific instructions on how to
create a directive browsing activity, and will show a YouTube video to explain the functions of
Prezi.
Procedures:
1. Before the students create the directive browsing activity, the teacher will call on
students and ask them to think of what they know or think they know about New
Orleans history. The students will type these ideas.
2. Students will use the internet to find at least 3 reliable websites that have information
about New Orleans history. Using the information from these websites, the students will
come up with 5 thought provoking questions about New Orleans history and type them
in a word document. The students will also include the links to the websites where they
found their information in their word document. This completes the creation of the
directive browsing activity.
3. Students will then get in partners. Partners will email each other the directive browsing
activity they created, and complete the others. Students should click the links included
in the document to find and record the answers to the questions. Save these responses.

4. Teacher will then show the students a YouTube video explaining the functionality of
Prezi. The teacher will include a sample Prezi they have created on this topic.
5. Once the students have a full understanding of Prezi, partners will work together to
create a Prezi presentation using the information gathered from their directive browsing
activities. Prezis should include a title slide, a slide listing their prior knowledge, and 510 slides of what they learned during the directive browsing activity. Partners will
present these Prezis to the class.

Student Accommodations:

Exceptional students will also complete an additional directive browsing activity

provided by the teacher, but will be required to complete the same assignments.
Students who do not finish in time can complete their presentation at home and
present that following day.
