There are many elements of this novel that make it so appealing
to children. I feel as though one of these is the relationship between
Bonnie and Sylvia. The on going adventure between the girls and the
friendship displayed throughout the entire novel.
Another appeal is the suspense. The drama added to this novel
is wonderful.
It keeps the reader on their toes. From the evil governess to the
suspenseful train ride, to their mission to find aunt Jane, the mystery
and the bravery that are produced are perfect for young readers to
really connect to and make them not want to put the book down.
The difference between Bonnie and Sylvia is something else I
think young readers connected too. The two characters are different in
multiple ways. I feel as though this gives the readers a chance to have
two characters to chose from to connect to or maybe they even
connect to both characters.
An appealing feature of the book, aside from the story, is the text
in the book. Its a good, readable size that doesnt scare young
readers away from looking at it. The book is an easy read, with an

easy concept to understand and a good length to the book as well.

Adding in the fact that there are pictures also draws young readers in
as well. The diction Joan Aiken uses is also perfect for a young reader.
