Lesson 2: What is the
ts
respiratory system?
page: 166
Context of the lesson:
This lesson is the second lesson in chapter 5(Structure and Function), what is the
respiratory system?
Standard:
Students know how the human body systems have basic structures, functions and
needs.
Teaching goals:
- The overall aim of this lesson is to teach students the how the respiratory system
works and the main organs functions in breathing.
Learning objectives:
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding that the respiratory system is made up with lungs
and other structures.
- Explain how the respiratory system works in human body.
Inquiry:
Students will demonstrate that we exhale carbon dioxide.
Model the respiratory system by using simple materials.

Assumptions about prior learning:

The learners already know that lungs are the main organs in the respiratory system.
They are familiar with the carbon dioxide and oxygen concept in the circulatory
system, but they need to know it links even in the respiratory system.
Anticipated problems and possible solutions:
P:Low-level students might find difficulties to model the lungs.
S: The teacher will help them during the modeling activity.
P: Maybe some ESL students do not get the explanation from the video.
S: The teacher will provide extra explanation and translate to Arabic if needed.

-What is the respiratory system?

- How does it works?
- What is the main organ in this system?
- Where does it begins?
- What do you know & want to know about
this system?
- What happened when we exhale? Inhale?
- Why the rib cages are important?
- Why the lungs inhale when we breathe
oxygen?
- How can we model the lungs?
- Why the blue water turned to yellow?
- Follow the instruction sheets to do the
experiments.

Main tasks or activities:

1. KWL chart (what do you know &

system?)
2. What do we breathe out?
3. Video & worksheets
4. Let's model the respiratory system
5. What did you learn from today's
lesson? (KWL chart)

-Read the cautions carefully.
