Content Standards:
RL.1.9- Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.
Learning Objectives (Aligned to Standards & Assessment Plan):
1. When finished reading a story, the student will be able to compare and contrast the adventures and experiences
of characters in a story with their personal experiences by listing at least 3 similarities and differences.

Assessment Plan (Aligned to Learning Objectives):
Formative Assessment:
1. While reading the story, I will have the students raise a green or red popsicle stick- representing
similarities and differences- whenever they hear a similarity or difference that relates to the students
lives

Summative Assessment:
1. The students will turn and talk to a partner and discuss the terms compare and contrast and why it is
important to know and understand the difference between the two terms

Procedures - Lesson Introduction: 10 minutes


1. I will ask the students to come sit in a circle on the carpet
2. I will then display 4 objects and have the students identify similarities and differences between the 4 objects
Procedures - Lesson Body:
Presentation/Explicit Instruction (I do): 20 minutes
o I will read the story, Madeline, to the students
o After the story, I will introduce the terms: compare and contrast
o I will then explain to the students that before I read the story, they were comparing and contrasting the
4 objects on display

Structured and Guided Practice (We do): 10 minutes


o On the smart board, I will create a T-chart to compare similarities and differences
o I will give an example of similarities and differences on a previous story read in class
o The students will turn and talk and tell their partner what compare and contrast means

Independent Practice/Application (You do): 15 minutes


o The student will make a T-chart comparing and contrasting at least 3 similarities and differences about
Madelines lifestyle and their personal lifestyles.
o The student will then take a blank piece of computer paper and section it into 4 equal sections.
o The student will pick one similarity and one difference from their T-chart and illustrate it.

Procedures - Lesson Closure: 10 minutes


1. I will ask the students what story was read and what the it was about
2. I will ask the students what compare and contrast means after giving the students a universal hand
signal to answer
3. The students will then have to pick a book out on their own and do the exact same assignment as
demonstrated in class
a. Create T-chart- 3 similarities and 3 differences
b. Illustrate at least 1 similarity and difference

1. Madeline- Ludwig Bemelmans
2. SMART Board
3. Pencil, Markers, Crayons, Color pencils
4. Blank Computer paper
Research and Theory Commentary:
1. Vygotsky- theory of cognitive development & scaffolding
a. Social interaction is a large influence in the development of children
b. This is used when the students are turning and talking to a partner
c. Interaction with the teacher and other students helps the student develop skills necessary in
order to complete a task individually
2. Dewey- children learn best when they interact with their environments and are actively involved with
the school curriculum
a. This is used when the students are applying the new terms, compare and contrast, in their Tcharts and illustrations
