This class was informative and powerful with the

combination of solution-focused therapy and credible
messengers. Solution-focused therapy was a great
technique and I felt that I was able to develop my own
way of using it with students. I found the credible
messengers to be extremely powerful and they provided
us with insight that simp ly cannot be accessed by text. I
enjoyed the opportunity to learn about community
programs and resources and gain insight into social
justice issues. Furthermore, I was able to learn more
about grief as a critical incident topic and was able to
help develop a manual with resources for students
dealing with the grief.
This class which focused on small groups was highly
insightful. I feel well prepared to run small groups as a
result of the class and had first -hand experience of being
in a small group as we held them in class weekly. This
class gave me the foundations of group counse ling,
including ground rules, confidentiality, consent forms,
the right to pass, determining what students would be
good participants and many other topics. In addition to
learning techniques and basics, I was able to practice my
facilitating ski lls, team building techniques and focus on
char_ac!~Jstis;s ()i_e_<3_r!_icul~r_age groups.

CSP 742 Ethics {1}

ARP660{3)

This class focused on the policy, politics, ethics and laws

of school counseling. I was able to determine how each
of these plays a role in the job of a school counselor and
was able to apply them to situations that might arise in
the workplace with colleagues and students alike. I feel
confident in finding resources regarding these topics and
properly know how to use the ASCA Ethical Standards. I
also feel as though I am more knowledgeable about
current political trends in the field.

5.12.15

This class focused on counseling theories that can be

used in the school counseling field. I feel like I have a
better understanding of theories and can use them as
resources for working with students.

Observe school governance meetings (e.g.,

meetings, school board)

(SDSU Practicum, 2012-2013}

I attended a School Site Council meeting on March 25,

2016. The site council was attended by parents, teachers,
a community organization member, the head school
counselor and the principal. The principal hosted the
meeting and provided insight about the funding and
budget allocated for next year. He was explaining that
because the school has such a high population of English
language l earners there was extra money being
allocated for different resources. The parents who were
participating only spoke Spa nish and were provided with
interpreters who could explain to them what the

principal was sharing and share with the principal their

thoughts . The final decision was to use money for
computer program licensing, which was approved by all
members present.
I was assigned a counseling load of 10 students, but only
worked with seven of the students, since others were
often on fieldtrips or could not be pulled out of class.
During the sessions, we worked on creating short and
long term goals, such as suiting up at P.E. and promoting
from g th grade. Each student was called in and notified of
the confidentiality guidelines before I began working
with them . Some students really enjoyed being called in
while others were hesitant. I was good at building
rapport with the students and many of them were quick
to say hello in the hallways. I also felt that I used my
counseling techniques of active listening and
paraphrasing well. My weakness would have been not
having enough time to meet with all of them every day
that I was on campus.
I co-facilitated a counseling group focused on
attendance. The group consi sted of nine students and
met for 6 weeks. I really enjoyed working with this group
and was good at building rapport with them . I felt that I
was organized and used small group techniques of
participating in the group and sitting with them in the
circle. I believe that I was able to make the group fun and
interesting and saw an improvement in their pre/post
test regarding their own attendance. A weakness that I
can work on is learning better how to manage students
who may take up a lot of the group's time or is a
dominant participant in the grou~--- __

I observed and participated in assisting 6th and ih

graders in their classes fo r their next grade level. We
assisted students in selecting and submitting their class
schedule through Naviance. A strength of mine would be
encouraging students to take electives that best fit with
their interests and goals. A weakness of mine would be
understanding the general codes of certain classes and
pre-requisites.

Develop, implement, and evaluate an

intentional guidance activity in one ofthe
following areas: academic, career, or
personal/social development
(Consider ASCA Results Report)

We created a guidance activity based on the academic

domain which focused on increasing attendance. We
included areas such as barriers, motivation and priorities.
I think strength of mine included creating creative
activities that were interactive, fun and insightful. I also

Continue monitoring academic progress of

case study student (from 622A) and
evaluating effectiveness of interventions.
Modify intervention s if needed.

Yasmin's had fewer issues with her behavior early in the

semester. She has a few incidents in regard to her
behavior, but generally she had done well. I saw her in
the hall recently and she was in good spirits and said that
she has been doing well and behaving.
I was able to meet one mother for a short period of time,
but we did not discuss her daughter's academic progress.
We simply were introduced and her daughter reminded
her that I was the counselor she was meeting with
weekly and the mom acknowledged it. I spoke to many
students about their parents and wish that I had the
opportunity to meet them and discuss their children's
progress. While I have spoken to parents on the phone, I
have not met them in person and look forward to
working wi!h_parents rrwre_in the future.

2.19.15

Observe process of how school determines

student placement in classes in next grade
level for upcoming year.

Conduct parent conference with at least

two of the students' on your caseload to
discuss student's academic progress

Homework Club

Gender Sexua lity Alliance (GSA)

We created a weekly Homework Club that assisted

students with homework from all classes. I was able to
work with students one-on-one with various assignments
and was able to suggest study tips and skills.

5.14.15

We facilitated the Gender Sexuality Alliance club named

Connected Lines. We met weekly and planned and
implemented lessons on student's rights, women's
rights, healthy re lationships, discrimination, self-esteem,
and a variety of other topics. We had celebrations and
participated in ice-breakers regularly. I was able to
create a great rapport with the students and use my
creativity to think of topics and activities. I would like to
strengthen my understanding of issues for transgender
students.
