Cannon Mills was a very successful textile company in the beginning in which it was
created by James Cannon. Throughout its reign the ownership was inherited by his son Charles
Cannon and then eventually fell under the successful businessman David Murdock in the
twentieth century. During this time period, the name of Cannon Mills was changed into Cannon
Mills Textile, then Fieldcrest Cannon Mills, and finally Pillowtex. Many individuals enjoyed
working for this textile company due to the tradition of the owners aiding the employees with
benefits. The majority of the employees were from the Cabarrus County area in North Carolina.
However, the company started to decline in value during the time it was known as Pillowtex.
Many employees lost their jobs that they had held for a long period of time.
