Assessment of Objective Accomplishment:

2. Question and Answer
3. Graphic organizer

Procedure with Amount of Time Stated for Each Activity:

Morning (1 hour):
Using transparency R114, the class will discuss the sounds made by the r-controlled vowel /or/, ore, our. The
students will choral read a list of corresponding words and will identify and circle words in sentences provided by
the teacher.
Next, the teacher will show a brief video of the featured story Serious Farm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=RyyTDmFiEsI). The video will introduce the first part of the story. After the video, students will make
predictions about the farmer and the animals. The teacher will mark predictions on the dry erase board. The class
will move to the back of the room with their Story Town books and read the rest of Serious Farm. The teacher will
ask comprehension questions after each page. Following the reading, the class will complete a graphic organizer
showing the problem, genre, setting, and characters of the story.
Afternoon (35 minutes):
Genre Study: Fantasy
The teacher will revisit the genre of fantasy by having the students discuss the differences between stories that
could be real and stories that could not be real (compare and contrast). The teacher will also introduce vocabulary
and historical elements that the student will encounter in the lesson (illuminator, abbey, Abbott, the invasion of
Ireland by the Vikings, etc.). After whole group discussion, the teacher will play the first 8 minutes of the Irish (for
St. Patricks Day theme) fantasy film: The Secret of Kells. After viewing the 8-minute segment, the teacher will ask
the students what genre/genres the film could be. After whole group inquiry and predictions, the teacher will show
another clip from later in the film. This clip will show a fantasy element, which will prompt another interactive
whole group discussion comparing parts of the film and their potential genres. The final 2-minute movie clip will
show students the end result of an illuminators work (illustrations done using ink, paint, and liquid gold). The
lesson will conclude by distributing authentic Irish-made cheese from Dublin. Students will continue their
discussion of genre and Irish history while they sample the cheese. They will state their final conclusions about the
genre and the class will also provide their opinions on whether or not they liked the cheese (we will graph the
results during our next math lesson).
Supplementary Activities:
Read robust vocabulary letter (page 206 in Storytown book). Have students write their own letter using 6-10 robust
words. Must underline the robust vocabulary.
