HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR
SPRING 2016

LEARNING CONTRACT
Goal: To use my top strengths of Individualization, Relator, Ideation, Woo, and Empathy
in an interpersonal setting that corresponds with the vision, values and mission of URIs
Center for Student Leadership Development.
Activity: To accomplish my goal I dedicated some of my free time this semester to
become a Leadership Ambassador for the CSLD. It was my job to go to attend different
Welcome Days, explain what the leadership institute and minor are; and why an incoming
freshman should consider pursuing these great opportunities. I represented the CSLD, I
needed to dress and act professionally during my time volunteering.
Annotation: During the month of April 2016 I completed my Learning Contract. On the
2nd and the 9th I dedicated my morning and afternoon to representing the CSLD at URIs
Welcome Days as a Leadership Ambassador. I was able to communicate with prospective
students who were debating starting their college career at URI. This allowed me to give
them information about the Leadership Institute and the Leadership Minor.
It was a very interesting experience to talk about a program that I am so
passionate about. This experience allowed to utilize my top strengths and values for the
good of the CSLD. The strength that helped me the most was definitely my top strength
of individualization. While I was speaking with prospective students it enabled me to
gain a sense of what they are interested in and figure out what they are interested in. This
made connection with students on an individual level very easy. Relator also made
conversing with students and parents very fluid. I wasnt nervous and this strength
allowed me to think on my feet and relate my personal experiences in the program to the
interests of the prospective student. My third strength of ideation really didnt help me
that much, however there were some instances where I used this strength to answer a
question creatively or think outside the box.
My final two strengths of woo and empathy were very important because I was
able to connect with the student on a more personal level and be able to win them into
applying for Institute. What really gave me success in this position was the culmination
of all my strengths together. Most of my strengths are relational (with the exception of
ideation and woo) and when they came together they gave me insight into the person I
was talking to and helped me make an instant connection with them.
This experience was very beneficial to me as leader. It not only allowed me to
exercise my strengths for a good cause, but it allowed me to connect with the future
leaders here at URI. I really enjoyed talking about the leadership program because it is a
fantastic program and one that I really believe in, I also just love to talk so this was a
great Learning Contract activity for me. This was a very great opportunity and I would
encourage future FLITE students to pursue this opportunity for their Learning Contract.

Evidence of me attending the welcome days and completing my Learning Contract is this
picture of the name tag I was given to wear at both Welcome Days.
