QUALIFICATION
What does Qualification mean?

Qualification is the process of demonstrating that the


candidate possesses the required training, experience,
knowledge and capabilities to perform NDT as defined in the
written practice.
An individual is qualified when they have achieved these
criteria.

CERTIFICATION
What does Certification mean?

Certification is written testimony that all the qualification


criteria in the Written Practice have been satisfied.

It is independent verification of qualifications!

LEVELS of CERTIFICATION

What are the basic levels of certification?


Specifications establishes three levels of Qualification.
NDT Level I
NDT Level II
NDT Level III

The NDT Level

WHAT CAN A NDT LEVEL I DO?


A Level I is qualified to perform specific calibrations,
specific NDT, and specific evaluations for acceptance
according to written instructions and to record results.
An NDT Level I can receive instruction or supervision
from a NDT Level II or III.

The NDT Level III

WHO IS THE NDT LEVEL III?


An NDT Level III is usually the person who administers the NDT
program.
The Level III establishes the inspection procedures and the
acceptance criteria.
Has a background on the materials, fabrication, and product
produced.

How can I verify Level III certification?


Verify By:

ASNT website (www.asnt.org ) for ASNT certs. (search by


cert # or name).
Asking for documentation for In-house programs (i.e., test
scores, etc.).

Initial and Refresher Training Requirements:

Below is a list of examples of minimum level of
educational backgrounds of Level I and Level II
candidates:
9th grade education plus 10 years previous experience

High school education plus 5 years previous experience


4 year college degree plus 1 year previous experience

Refresher Training

Refresher Training Requirements


Will vary from employer to employer. The requirement must be
stated in the Written Practice. Things to consider for refresher
training are:
The relative difficulty of the method.
The experience of the NDT personnel.
The criticality of the inspection.
The type of refresher training.

requirements may come from codes, standards,
specifications, or procedures.
Much like a baseball umpire, you are judging things

A procedure is a very specific, step-by-step, lower-level


document on how to perform an operation.
Procedures will usually have a purpose, scope,
reference, outline of work to perform, acceptance
criteria and documentation requirements.
