Set Induction: Since Michigan is still having wintery

weather, we need to make sure we are keeping up with
healthy habits to prevent germs from spreading to make
sure ourselves and our friends do not get sick.

Learnable Piece: The primary goal of this game is for

students to know ways they can prevent germs from
spreading: washing hands, covering up their cough, and
covering up their sneeze. After this game, you all will be
able to demonstrate your knowledge of preventing the
spread of germs.
Presentation of New Material/Directions:
To play this game of freeze tag, we will have
germs who will tag people safely (ask students
what a safe tag is/model safe tag)
Once you are tagged you are frozen because
when you are sick, you do not feel 100%
The doctors will have to come around to the
sick people and unfreeze them by safely tapping
their shoulder
However, before you can move again, you have
to tell the doctor one of the ways you can
prevent germs from spreading in the future
Once you do this, the doctor can move on and
unfreeze more sick people and the sick person
is healthy again and can resume play
The round will end when I give this call and

response: When I say cough cough you all say

cover it up (practice this 1-2 times)
Review:
o What do the germs do? (Tag people)
o What do the doctors do? (Unfreeze
people)
o What do you do if you are tagged by a
germ? (Freeze)
o What do you do when a doctor tags you?
(Say a way to prevent spread of germs)
o When does the game end? (When the
teacher gives the call and response)
Ask if there any more questions
Transition: Ask for two volunteers to be doctors and
then ask for two volunteers to be germs.

Activity:
Have four cones to designate the corners of the
playing area (about or full gym)
Students can use the whole playing area to run
from the germs and freeze in the spot where
they were tagged
Monitor students and give feedback while they
are playing the game
Once it has been several minutes, do the call and
response
If time, do another round with more germs
At the end of playing, I will regroup students to go
over the lesson and objectives
Possible Modifications: If game is too easy, more
players can become the germs so that there are more
germs than doctors.
If game is too hard, more players can become the
doctors so that there are more doctors than germs.
Lesson Review: Review learnable piece about how to
prevent the spread of germs. Ask at least three students
on how they can prevent their germs from spreading to
others.
