The lesson 3: Protecting plants and animals

Date: March 9, 2016

What a beautiful feeling to start third lesson to my students and the first one for my
mentor college teacher. I was excited to show myself as a real teacher while teaching
lesson. As usual as each class. I started introducing day, date name of the unit and
lesson on PowerPoint by using puppet. It is so important step to start lesson in this
way. I discussed classroom rules with my students to make sure of following each
rule. I also motivate them by showing certificate as rewarding. A student who follow
rules and participate will get certificate as reward as keep up going on. As
Behaviorism stated that using positive reinforcement helps students to develop skills
and create environment like competition to challenge (n.d). Next, I showed students
learning objective on display, I let them to think little bit about it such what it means. It
is known that asking question are helping students to promote development of critical
thinking (McClung & Hoglund, n.d). Move on showing a video about habitat for
students. So, the habitat is the same meaning of refuge that let students make
connecting. I noticed that all students involved while watching video and some
students were singing. As Brunner stated that showing pictures in teaching is a good
way to acquire iconic skills while feeling enjoy (2014). It is a great idea to show
students the refuge picture to think what does means after watching a video. I think
that way is helping students to memory what they saw it on video and make
connecting to notice the picture. In this case, the students develop cognitive skill in
thinking. Move on, exploring activity was solving story on poster. This activity is
promoted collaborative strategy, it helps students to think in higher level while sharing
together (Vygotsky, n.d). That is because, each student have own idea, so when
students collaborate assist to build perfect idea. Each group has poster that includes
two picture, students should write sentence how they can protect plants and animals.
Indeed, that this activity promoted linguistic skill of learning style by using language to
describe what they observe in the cards (Silver , Strong & Perini, 2016). I noticed that
students not sure how many sentences that should write. So, they were wasting time
while ask me. It is important matter next time identify sentences for students to write.
Another point that should make sure next time is to tell my teacher not helping
students to do activity. That is because it considers formative assessment that
students should do it by themselves. Thus, it is not fair some group do it by
themselves and a group take assistance from the teacher. In discussing part, it
seemed to me students write a good answer to protect plants and animals. Next, the
students select one solution to protect plants and animals then imagine with
discussing the problem of solution. This activity was challenging one that assist to
improve mental skill in thinking. At the end, I just did plenary with my students to
check if they achieved learning objective or not. Thus, I noticed that students
achieved objective, despite should give students question card to solve it. However,
the time is not working that let me to do it orally with them. Indeed, next time should
work in time management as well as best way. Although, I used a timer on iPad to

make sure of managing time while do activity. But, it seemed to me that some
students were playing on it, they thought is like a game instead do activity. So, that is
one thing helped to waste time. I think that should explain to students not touch timer
next time. That means, giving students specific instruction in simple way. In total, I
discussed with my college teacher about feedback. In the strength points, he
reflected that I did a great job in explaining lesson, the instruction was clear. He also
impressed the strategy for misbehave students that informs him or her to repeat what
other said. The video was friendly to the students. While mean, the points that should
improve it was the question must be clearer, the definition should be simple and the
students should explore the concept. Additionally, the hand working activity looked at
difficult for students and manage time. Well, I agree with those points and I will do my
best next lesson to improve it. It is a good thing to make mistakes that challenge me
to find the best solution. I think that was perfect lesson even now and I am so proud
of myself.
