Lifeguard is Present
Primary Care

! Critical Injury:

Not breathing or has trouble breathing


Has a head, neck, or back injury
Unconscious or semi-conscious
Has broken bones or dislocations
Has an allergic reaction
Severely bleeding
Has a nosebleed
As a result of impact
Periodic (ie. Seasonal nose bleeds) Code Red only if bleeding last
longer than 5 minutes or is accompanied by dizziness, vision
impairment, or nausea.
" If the person is unable to move him/herself
" If the person requests an ambulance call
" If you or another staff member feels that an ambulance is needed
# Lifeguards are First Responders and activate Code Red (EMS).
# Lifeguards follow Critical Incident Protocol as outline by Campus Recreational Sports.
# Athletic Training Staff is alerted by RS staff, athlete, or coach.
# Athletic Training Staff provides secondary care and fills out RS paperwork as needed.

! Non-Critical Injury
# Lifeguards are First Responders.
# Athletic Training Staff is alerted and takes over care of the athlete.
# Lifeguards have Athletic Training staff fill out witness statements explaining care that
was provided.
Secondary Care
! Continued Care
# Stabilize and monitor athlete as needed.
# Notify the team physician and/or staff athletic trainer.
# Accompany the injured athlete if necessary.
# Designate someone to keep record of events and vital information.
# Obtain Insurance/Emergency contact Information.
! Assembly Hall

situation:

" Between the #29 & 281 Banners on the east side of the pool deck

" Lifeguard office located on the pool deck Room 001F

# Spine-boards and C-Collars
" Attached to the back of the lifeguard chairs.

OR
Incident occurs outside of the pool deck
Primary Care
! Athletic Training Staff is alerted by coach or athlete
# Use intercoms to notify Rec Sports staff, who in turn will activate EMS.
" Intercom locations (3):
Next to Rec Sports office 001G on the pool deck
Next to hot tub near diving well
Near storage area near shallow end of the pool
" Staff Athletic Trainer or designate provides emergency care.
" Wait for ambulance and direct them to site.
EMS access point: door by diving well.
" Prepare/obtain any necessary equipment.
# Notify the staff present at the Equipment Desk outside of the Womens locker room.
Secondary Care
! Continued Care
# Stabilize and monitor athlete as needed.
# Notify the team physician and/or staff athletic trainer.
# Accompany the injured athlete if necessary.
# Designate someone to keep record of events and vital information.
# Obtain Insurance/Emergency contact Information.
! Assembly Hall

situation:
