7.12 b. use data from a random sample to make

inferences about population.
The student will be able to identify important information
from a random data set of data and make educated
inferences about a population as a whole. Students will
also be able to identify what is being asked in the word
problem.
The student will be able to read the word problem and
demonstrate the data in a graphic organizer to arrange
data in a clear and logical manner.

Hays School District surveyed a random sample of 60

students about the amount of time the watch TV. Of the
students surveyed, 14 average watching more than 4
hours of TV each day. There are 1143 middle school
students in the district.
Based on the data, what is the most reasonable estimate
for the number Hays School District middle school
students who average watching more than 4 hours of TV
each day?
Strategy Used

Variation on a KWL chart (attached).

Procedure

Students will be given the KWL chart where they will read
through the word problem for understanding. Teacher will
read problem aloud to clear up any inconsistences.
Teacher will explain KWL chart to students showing
example by prompting students to raise hands to give
answers for K portion of the chart. Teacher should
redirect if given incorrect information. Students will then
work independently for the first few minutes to finish
graphic organizer and solve the problem. Then students
will check work with a partner at a teacher-designated
time.

Assessment

Students will turn in KWL chart at the end of class to be

checked for accuracy and completion by the teacher. If

teacher notices inconsistencies in the learning, i.e. many

incorrectly solve the problem, another KWL chart will be
used for the warm up the next class day.
