PROJECT CONCEPT

________________

DR. SOLTYS GEEN 140051 #70

THE PROBLEM:
50% of avid bicyclists will have a bike stolen
-International Journal for Sustainable Transportation
Prominence of bike theft on college campuses
Poorly-designed racks result in improper lock-up

DIMENSIONS
________________

SOLUTION:
A minimal bike rack that securely locks both the
front wheel and frame of a bike without the
need for a portable lock.
OBJECTIVES:
Reduce risk of bike theft
Optimize bike storage and security
Control bike safety virtually and remotely

REQUIREMENTS
& CONSTRAINTS
________________
REQUIREMENTS:
Designed and prototyped for under $375
Must be an original product that optimizes a
solution to an existing issue
Scalable for a larger market
PARTICULAR CONSTRAINTS:
Power-efficient
Able to withstand harsh weather
Practical for a college campus
Immune to possible vandalism

THE BIKE RACK MODEL:
1.
The bike is
rolled in so that
the front
wheel fits in
the trough
structure.

ARDUINO SOFTWARE:
Prints a menu to LCD screen asking for input
from external keypad to lock or unlock
Uses RFID reader to scan a users card for ID
Outputs power to the solenoids
Compares cards and unlocks for correct ID
THE CIRCUIT:

2.
The force of the
wheel rotates
the rack, which
aligns the bike
frame between

ANALYSIS & TESTING

________________
ONE IN 79 OCTILLION
Each radio frequency identification (RFID) tag
stores a unique, 96-bit binary number, suggesting
296 8 x 1028 possible number combinations.
FIGHTING A BEAR
The perpendicular force of the dowel being pulled
against the locking solenoid was tested up to 2,000
lbs without falter, which is equivalent to pulling
against a fully grown grizzly bear.
3 CHIPOTLE BURRITOS (+ CHIPS & QUESO)
The AC adapter used to power the system draws
12V * 2A = 24 watts, which would cost $26 to
run 24/7 for a year, based on calculations with the
average cost of electricity according to NPR.

FUTURE MODIFICATIONS
________________
WEATHERPROOF:
All metal components
Waterproof spray coats and sealings
Protective screening for external electronics
SOLAR PANELS:
Energy-efficient
Suitable for outdoor product
EXTENDABLE ARMS:
Allows user to better suit his or her own bike
