Task Analysis
Warm up: Since the class has learned lots of weather vocabulary, students sketch a quick picture (2-3 minutes) of their favorite type of
weather so far.
Anticipatory Set (Building Background):
Act out/demonstrate with noise recordings weather types learned (whole group). TW play a recording of a thunderstorm, and show a
PowerPoint with the new vocabulary word, and a picture for a thunderstorm and allow the children in their own space to act out the storm
(10-20 seconds). Discuss characteristics of a storm quickly. Then, play a recording of the wind, show the slide with the vocabulary word
for the wind, and allow children in their own space to act out the wind. Discuss characteristics of wind quickly and continue until all
previously learned vocabulary has been reviewed.
Lesson Focus (Teacher Modeling):
Model 1 example of matching a particular weather vocabulary term with the picture. TW think aloud to model process of elimination if
stumped. For example, My weather word is tornado. I know its a kind of storm, so, it cant be the sunny picture or the cloudy picture. It
might be the picture with the funnel cloud or the picture with gray skies, lots of wind, and stormy conditions. I remember that we talked
about the tornado having the funnel shape, so this picture makes the most sense.
TW pass out the weather vocabulary cards and the pictures.
The directions are to get a word from the container, try and find the matching picture, (all pictures are at each table), and then explain to
your table mates why you chose that picture for your word, and give two words to describe the type of weather
SW then, go to the self-checking chart and check to see if your picture matches your term.
Guided Practice (TW walk around and do visual assessment):
Involve class in an example, walking them through the steps and having children slowly articulate the steps.
1. Get a word from the container.
2. Find the picture.
3. Tell 3 people at your table why you chose the picture for your word.
4. Check on poster for accuracy.
5. Find another weather word.
Independent Practice (Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice):
Students begin the table word activity following the 5 steps they practiced from above.

Review/Assessment:
Think, pair, share about what was easy or challenging about the activity. Ask students, How did you figure out which picture matched
your words? TW ask students if any of their ideas changed when they told the 3 people at their table why they chose a picture.
Illustrate weather terms to create a flip book dictionary
