Parenting and Not Parenting Literature Review

Every kid has parents, some play a big role in their life and some parents just have the
title and do not do anything for the kids. Every kid has a different situation and even
those kids with both parents in their life doesnt necessarily mean that kid will be more
successful than a kid with a single mom raising them, its all about how the parents
teach them and how they raise their children. A parents relationship with their child is
very important because it may affect how the child react in certain situations and it may
also affect how the child act in public with or without the parent or parents being
present. Home training is the things a parent teaches their kid like how kids should ask
in public and how they should go about certain situations. Knowing how to parent isnt
something you born with, its something that requires learning experiences and years of
doing. Parents with multiple kids usually learn from things they did with the first child
and do something specific different to see if better results come out. Some parents get
better as time goes by with more children they have and others stay the same. In order
to understand the effects of parenting have on kids it is four important questions that
should be answered.

Do lack of parenting affects kids behavior?

Do lack of parenting affects the kids academic performance?
Does financial status affect the way parents parent or not parent?
Does the relationship status of parents play a role on how parents parent?

Parenting and Not Parenting

Answering these questions will provide information on how parents affect their kids and
their life.
Do lack of parenting affects kids behavior?
A kids behavior is a reflection on how they are being taught at home and if they are
acting up then that most likely means that they are some problems at home either
internally or externally. Lack of parenting does indeed affects the kids behavior
because if you are not paying the kid any attention then the kid will go astray and will
not do what they are supposed to do according to long time parent Lyn Sturdivant in
a recent interview that was done. Lyn Sturdivant have three kids of her own and she
has raised them all three to be successful with her oldest medically retired from the
army, and her other two currently in school, including her youngest Desmond who is
on a full scholarship to play football at Hampton University. Kids who isnt given the
right amount of attention from their parents will go somewhere else and will act out
for attention, whether it is at school, church or even on a sports team where they will
be corrected by an authority that it isnt their parents. Parents who give their kids the
right amount attention at home doesnt have to worry about their kids acting out in
public places because the kids will not be fighting for attention that they receive from
home and the child will be able to focus on what they need to do and what you
taught them will play a huge role in that. In the book Leaving Atlanta , Rodney and
his father did have a good relationship and he didnt show any attention and didnt
care for Rodney and that caused to act out and Rodney decided to steal from the

store of his fathers childhood friend own on a regular basis, even stealing for his
friend from school.
Do lack of parenting affects the kids academic performance?
Being Successful in school is one of the major keys to success but most kids who
succeed in school couldnt possibly do it on their own. The lack of parenting does in
fact affect the childs academic performance, In the book Leaving Atlanta, Rodneys
report card wasnt all that good due to the lack of attention that his parents gave him
but his younger sister on the other hand who their parents pay more attention too
had straight As on her report card. She had the support and push from the kids
where in Rodneys case, his parents couldnt care less about him and it showed on
his report card. If Rodney had more push than his report card would have reflected
the push and support, he didnt get in the beginning with his parents. In the same
Interview with Ms. Sturdivant, she said that she pushed her kids to make good
grades in school and if they struggled she would take extra time to help them out
with that certain subject. Also she said that she would sometimes reward her kids for
doing good but that was on rare occasions like when her children would bring
straight As home. She knows that her kids arent perfect so when they do bring
perfection home then it should be rewarded that way the can keep shooting for
perfection. Sometimes incentives are required in order to push the children that was
they can have something to shoot for while they are doing their work. said
Sturdivant. Children with something to shoot for will normally do anything to get that
certain incentive that they would receive.

Does financial status affect the way parents parent or not parent?
Children cannot change the financial status of their parents but the parents can change
it by working harder and setting a foundation before they have kids. Not being financially
stable can affect not only the parents parent the children but also it also affects the kids
behavior. If the parents do not have foundation or backbone, then it will be certain things
that the parents cannot provide for the kids. Both parents need to be able to provide for
the kids and have good foundation because if they cannot provide food for the kids,
clothes for the kids, or financial stability for the kids then the kids will not have the things
they need to be successful. Financially stability also may affect how parents want to
parent because if they dont have the money to pay for an appropriate home then it may
hinder the parent to provide the proper environment for the child and for themselves.
Does the relationship status of parents play a role on how parents parent?
Some kids are born out of wedlock and sometimes relationships between the parents
may not work out. Just because the relationship between the parents doesnt work out
doesnt mean it affects how they parent that child. Both parents may not see eye to eye,
according to Sturdivant, both parents will be cordial enough to do what is best for
theyre child. If the parents are separated that doesnt mean the child is separated from
the parents also, it means that parents most work harder in order to make sure the child
is supported for the right way and successful with the help of both of their parents.

Conclusion

Parents who parent their children will give their child and more chance of being
successful but if parents start slacking off on parenting their child in pivotal years then it
will greatly increase the chance of the child down the wrong road. A childs success
starts with the way the parents teach and care for them.
