Dear Ms. Hiring:

I am writing in response to your job posting on the Boeing careers website on January 20th. I am
hoping that you will consider me for the level I systems engineering position. I think that with

my academic background in physics, my work and undergraduate research experience I am

qualified for this position.
My education at Washington State University has given me strong critical and logical thinking
skills as well as hands on experience with multiple programs. I have experience collecting and
analyzing data using Origin pro in the undergraduate lab. I have used programs such as MatLab,
Mathmatica and Spyder (Python) to create numerical models for class projects and homework.
For a group project used Solidworks to help make an accurate model of the NASAs Voyager I
from sketches provided from JPL. From my group work, I have learned skills to lead, coordinate,
and prioritize a team. I think with these skills and my passion for learning that I could quickly
become an active contributor to your team.
My extracurricular activity participating in physics club as an officer has taught me many
applicable skills that would make me a valuable asset to any team. I have helped to organize
events such as the annual pumpkin drop for dads weekend that is always a hit, in the past it has
been featured on ESPN. I also coordinated and lead a group of students to apply and organize the
logistics for trip to the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) in Corvallis
Oregon this year.
My undergraduate research and work experience has taught me many skills that I think would
make me a good fit for this position. While on Dr. Collins research team we had weekly
collaborative meetings about progress and next steps. I learned good team work and
communication skills as well as more technical skills such as preparing samples with specific
compositions. I have learned how to work with various machines like vacuum tubes, arc welders
and scales. My work in the food and retail industries has taught me applicable skills too. I have
learned how to be highly motivated, work long hours and adapt to changing situations as well as
interface between different groups. An example of multiple group interfacing would apply best to
my work experience at Matts Rotisserie and Oyster Lounge. There I had to be able to talk to
customers and assess their needs and to communicate with the kitchen, hostess, bar, management
and my peer servers to get their needs met. I think my background makes me a well-rounded
candidate.
I have attached a resume to the application that has an overview of my work and education
experience. Would it be possible to meet at your convenience to talk about my qualifications for
the system engineering position? Please feel free to contact me via email at
elyse.waham4@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Elyse Waham

Revisions & Reflection:

The application materials have received modification. The cover letter and resume has received a
change in font style and size so they match as well as formatting to the page to have one inch
margins on both. The resume has more spacing and bulletin points for those skills listed under
the skills and abilities for readability. I have added more background information to try and
standout from the crowd of applicants and fixed grammatical errors in my cover letter as well as
added the full address of the company. I have learned to tell a personal story in your cover letter
to stand out and explain short comings on your resume for a job. A cover letter also shows your
potential future employer that you have good communication skills so make sure it has good
readability and well written. To make sure your resume highlights key words from the job
application, this helps you stand out. I have learned how to write an effective cover letter and
resume.
