Roots of the Cold War Lecture Outline
I. Introduction- Post War World
a. U.S becomes world leader in the newly bipolar world

i. Economic giant, global presence, strong military, and full


recovery from the Great Depression.
ii. Rise of global expectations: Creation of United Nations, World
Bank, and the IMF.
b. The Truman Doctrine
i. Expands global stop to the idea of the spread of communism in
relation to Stalins creation of a communist bloc (Warsaw pact)
ii. $400 million sent in relief to Greece and Turkey in 1946
iii. Domino theory: one country falls, another will to communism!
iv. Thanks to Republicans winning the House and Senate in 1946
c. North Atlantic Treaty Organization
i. An attack on one is an attack on all
ii. Political, military, and economic cooperation
iii. Involved U.S and 12 European nations
d. Marshall Plan
i. $13 billion sent in economic aid to stabilize allies from the
repercussions of war
II. Division of Germany
a. Allies split Germany into four sectors (U.S, French, Russian, and British
zones)
b. Berlin split into East and West Berlin the west being controlled by the
U.S, French, and British; and East Berlin being controlled by the
Soviets.
c. Winston Churchill and the Iron Curtain Speech of 1946
i. Churchill, who had been defeated for re-election as prime
minister in 1945, was invited to Westminster College in Fulton,
Missouri where he gave this speech.
ii. Condemns the Soviet Unions policies in Europe and declares,
From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron
curtain has descended across the continent.
iii. Churchills speech is considered one of the opening volleys
announcing the beginning of the Cold War
III. Berlin Blockade and Airlift
a. In response to the Berlin Wall

c. Soviets closed all highways, railroads and canals from westernoccupied Germany into western-occupied Berlin they believed, would
make it impossible for the people who lived there to get food or any
other supplies and would eventually drive Britain, France and the U.S.
out of the city for good.
d. Operation Vittles-America and Operation Plainfare-United Kingdom
e. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew
the Deutschmark from West Berlin.
f. 1.5 mil tons of aid and over 200,000 flights
IV. Atomic Diplomacy
a. Background: Potsdam and Yalta Conferences
b. Attempts to use the threat of nuclear warfare to achieve diplomatic
goals.
c. M.A.D-Mutually Assured Destruction: fear of using weapons against
each other because the entire world could collapse
d. President Truman transferred several B-29 bombers capable of
delivering nuclear bombs to the region to signal to the Soviet Union
that the United States was both capable of implementing a nuclear
attack and willing to execute it if it became necessary.

terms listed are key to understanding the Cold War, in knowing
and understanding these terms you will find following the lectures
might be easier. Use this as a study tool for upcoming quizzes and
exams. Turn in next class meeting for credit, typed. Use outline
below as a guide.

Define: Given definition of term or event listed.

When and Where: Look at a map to find a
general or exact location of term listed. Generalize
location if necessary, i.e. Communism-where can it
be found?
C.Who: Explain who is involved. Why?

Significance: Determine the significance
behind each term in relation to the Cold War
specifically in YOUR OWN WORDS. The more detailed
an answer, the better in the long run.
