Becausetherehavebeennoextensivestudiesofsubstanceuseamongnurses,thereisnobasison
whichtoidentifygroupsofnursesatriskforsubstanceuseproblems.Certainnursingspecialties
weremorelikelythanotherstobeassociatedwithsubstanceuse.Nursesforavarietyofreasons
areaddictedandaccordingtotheirspecialtyfieldinwhichtheywork,theyaremorelikelyto
becomedependentondrugsoralcohol.Theprevalenceofpastyearsubstanceuseforall
substancescombinedwas32%.Formarijuana/cocaineuseitwas4%,forprescriptiontypedrags
itwas7%,andforcigarettesmokingitwas14%.Bingedrinkingwasreportedby16%ofthe
nurses.
Substanceuseamonghealthprofessionalsisaproblemthatthreatensprofessionalstandardsand
thedeliveryofqualityservicesand,ifleftunchecked,canleadtograveconsequencesforhealth
careconsumers.

Thestressfulconditionsofanursesjob,thatcausesthemtoabusedrugs.Thenursesthatabuse
andoraddictedtosubstanceshaveafamilyhistoryofemotionalimpairmentordrugoralcohol

abuse,andsomearetraumatizedaschildren.Notabletohandlethestressorsofthejob,but
needingthejobformoney,anursefeelsasifshehasnooptions,andquittingisnotanoption,so
inordertodealwiththejob,somenursesbecomeaddictedjusttocopeandtheyoungeryouare
themoreatriskyouarefordrugabuse.

needtobeawareoftheprevalenceofandriskfactorsforsubstanceandchemicaldependency.
