Background Information
As a mentor for Volunteers for youth, I mentor a girl from Roosa Elementary. My job is
to be a friend to her and listen to her whenever she needs it. The purpose of this is to build the
girls confidence, and make her feel comfortable. My goal with this is to build a meaningful
relationship with her so that she may look back and say that I have positively impacted her life in
some way. I want to be able to be someone who she looks up to with no doubt in her mind. This
is a one year commitment, and I am excited to take on the second semester with her since I do
meet her once a week on Friday mornings. As for Arubah, it is a clinic that people can come to
for any health related issues. They want to help out the community. By volunteering with them, I
will get exposure to the medical field which will help me in the long run since I will be going
into the medical field myself. Furthermore, Dr. Galutia is stationed at the Warren Clinic in
Owasso. It is a branch of St. Francis Hospital, and I look forward to seeing what shadowing my
doctor has to offer me.
Evidence of the need
Several kids go through tough times in their lives, and that is why there is such a program
as Volunteers for Youth. This program helps troubled kids have someone to look up to which is
their mentor. The mentor will serve as a role model and more importantly, a friend in that childs
life. That mentor may offer advice or simply listen to their mentee. Furthermore, the Arubah
Clinic is a place where people can go in Collinsville for health related issues. It is a community
clinic that is a lot more convenient to go to rather than going to a big hospital. Plus, Collinsville
is a smaller town, and sometimes going to a hospital can be out of a persons way. Therefore, this
clinic is down the Collinsville main street for the peoples convenience. People may not even
need a big hospital to solve their problem, and that is what Arubah Clinic is there for. Altogether,
Volunteers for Youth and the Arubah Clinic is there for the benefit of the community whether it
deals with them mentally or physically. As for shadowing, the need is really for myself. I think it
will be a very good experience for me to shadow my personal doctor. Doing so will give me an
idea of what I really want to do in the future.

Objectives
Through these two organizations, I hope to achieve to ability to further my personal
knowledge on how to build meaningful relationships with all types of people. They can be old or
young. Having the knowledge on how to converse with them will help my aspirations as a
pediatrician since I will have to talk with people on a daily basis. Shadowing my doctor, Dr.
Galutia, will also help me gain perspectives into the medical world and solidify my pursuit in the
medical field. I want to make sure that I am on the path I want to be.

Academic/ Career Background
Since I want to become a pediatrician in the future, participating in Volunteers for Youth
and the Arubah Clinc will be the perfect blend in helping me out with my career choice.
Volunteers for Youth will expose to children and the Arubah Clinic will let me see the medical
side of it. I have already been with Volunteers for Youth for a semester, therefore, I know what to
expect and what to do. However, I am excited to start my journey with the Arubah Clinic because
I have not been exposed to any medical stuff. I am ready to learn new things, and take in
everything it has to offer me. Shadowing my doctor will also help me in this area. I will get to
see first-hand how diagnosis are given. I will also get to see the patient-doctor interaction. While
taking notes, I can apply the things I learn to myself as a physician if I still choose to become

one. I think it will be a really interesting time for me, and I think there will be a lot of things I
can take away from the time being there. Hopefully, I will get to witness a diversity of issues
from patients.
Involvement
I am a mentor for Volunteers for Youth. As for Arubah, my involvement will vary daily
depending on what I sign up to do. I can either be a part of a prayer group, meal volunteer,
patient advocate, or be an administrative volunteer. This will also depend on where the
organization needs me the most. I will be placed based on efficiency, and where help is needed
the most. Sometimes, a prayer group is not necessary, therefore, I may not also be on the prayer
team at the clinic. Wherever I am placed, I look forward to serving the community as best as I
can. Furthermore, I am only allowed to shadow my doctor. I am simply observing the patients. I
cannot have patient interaction.

Anticipated Outcome
After orientation for Arubah Clinic, I hope to volunteer as a nurse, prayer, and room host.
I would get to take peoples temperature, blood pressure, height, weight, and many other things. I
hope doing this at Arubah will provide me with the necessary experience to help me get into
medical school. It will give me something to talk about when I interview for medical school. I
also want to get closer to the girl I mentor, and help her open up. I want to let her know that she
can trust me if she is ever going through a tough time. As for shadowing my doctor, I hope to
learn a lot of new things from observing the patient-doctor interactions. I hope to learn about
several diagnosis and learn about the unique communication they have. I also hope to learn a few
new things from my doctor like how to handle uncooperative patients or how to provoke
necessary answers to questions asked.
Accomplishments

Vang 5
I accomplished everything I intended to accomplish at the beginning of this semester.
Volunteering with Volunteers for Youth, the Arubah Clinic, and shadowing my doctor has all
been a wonderful experience. My little girl I mentor ended up becoming more open with me. She
is now more comfortable coming to me and confiding in me. She obtained my number, and she
now freely texts me whenever she feels the need to. If she ever has any personal problems, I
always try to give her the best advice that I can give. Compared to when we first started out, we
both have definitely become more comfortable with each other. We now have a diverse array of
conversations rather than the normal how are you type of conversations, which I am really
proud of. I am proud of the way she has grown, and I am glad that I was a positive part of that
process. Volunteering at Arubah Clinic was also a good experience. I basically had the role of a
nurse. I got to take height measurements, blood pressure, pulse, and several other little things.
Volunteering at the Arubah Clinic was very hands on, which I loved. However, it got very boing
very quickly because the place is very slow, which is one thing they can work on. After all duties
were taken care of, there was nothing left to do. It seemed like it was overstaffed, which was
unnecessary. Shadowing my doctor was extremely fun. I learned a lot of new things ranging
from communication to medical things. My favorite part was the communication aspect because
there was a lot of little details I was not aware about. For example, my doctor sometimes had to
manipulate conversations to the way she wanted it to go so that she may move on to other
patients. It was important that everyones needs were met.

Conclusion
After volunteering this semester, everything I experienced just solidified my love for
volunteering. I really love helping out the community, and I really love helping out on campus. I
realized that all kinds of help is needed whether it may be big or small. Every helping hand
counts. The accomplishments I made through volunteering makes me excited to further my
experience in volunteering. Especially after shadowing my doctor, I am beginning to have a
clearer understanding in what I want to do with my future, and I am excited to start to pursue my
future career. I will definitely continue to offer my services to both the community and campus. I
look forward to the new experiences.
