Introduction:
We have heard of zombies a lot from fictional movies such as The Walking Dead, Resident
Evil, Night of the living dead... or games such as Left4dead, Dead Island and other
materials. According to these, there are some causes of zombie such as radiation, mental
diseases, viruses, etc The most common way is the zombie infection usually comes from a
biological hazard1, like an unexpected accident in a laboratory of an organization that is
examining some fatal viruses could enable them to spread through the air. Then, these viruses
could effect on human body, making dead bodies become living corpses that we now call
zombies. The infection would start in small suburban areas to large cities. Gradually, the
infection would spread wider and wider until it goes beyond the control of government.
Ultimately, the infection would cause a great disaster, or in other words, a zombie apocalypse.
Therefore, the purpose of this proposal is to convince students at SLCC to enroll in zombie
survival course.

Salt Lake Community College would benefit greatly from adding a Zombie survival course. This
course would cover a variety of subjects that would help teach the students a wealth of
knowledge. Students and teachers alike will be in a new, creative and fun environment. This
class will help increase excitement and enthusiasm for classes that arent the normal lecture
type. This class would help get students outside of the classroom and into the outdoors. This
change in atmosphere would get students engaged and truly thinking about the course material,
instead of just listening to a teacher lecture. Overall, this course would not only enhance the
student experience here at SLCC, it would become an incentive to attract more students to
enroll at this college.

Current Situation:
In this day and age, many people suffer from a sense of helplessness and insecurity.
Computers, cars, and other modern amenities have enriched our lives and given us a life of
relative luxury. If all of this were to be taken away, suddenly, most of the population would not

know how to handle themselves. If there were a threat to individual safety on a national or
global scale, the vast majority of people would have no idea how to react.
One of the most brutal incidents that man could ever face may be that of a mental degeneration
or dead uprising on a massive scale. A zombie apocalypse, so to speak, would be catastrophic,
not just as a result of the direct damage it caused, but because we are unprepared for such a
situation.
If we were prepared for a zombie apocalypse, we would be prepared for almost every other
government uprooting catastrophe possible.
One of the major reasons behind a lack of current understanding and ability stems from a lack
of a perceived need. Who believes that a zombie apocalypse would actually occur? Crazy,
right? Thats exactly what we would think, being human. According to doctor Carol Weinstein,
individuals are prone to believe that bad things are far less likely to happen to them (such as a
car accident, natural disaster, etc.). The same is true for a catastrophic events involving mass
mayhem, overwhelming opposition, and extreme danger.
Recently, there have been a growing number of CREs (Carbapenem Resistant
Enterobacteriaceae) and other dangerous microorganisms. These antibiotic resistant bacterias
can cause major delusions and hallucinations after infecting their host. Who is to say that one of
these could not evolve into a brain altering pathogen? The growing number of dangerous,
untreatable diseases is frightening, and if one of these altered our ability to clearly perceive,
react, and understand our environment, mankind may quickly devolve into mindless eating
machines.
Although such spreading of pathogens may be unavoidable, it may not affect all people. These
survivors must be prepared to defend themselves from any ensuing difficulties. Yet, many will
not have the know-how to survive.

Figure 2- An uneducated victim

Even having the knowledge to go on will not be enough. Many people, even those that
understand, will lack the practical application of their knowledge to continue in such a
dangerous environment. Practice and field study are required to truly overcome this barrier.

Eventually, chaos and mayhem will strike. More and more countries are becoming nuclear and
unfriendly towards one another. Strains of bacteria and viruses are becoming more and more
resistant to antibiotics and treatments, while often affecting the brain. If nothing is done, the
pervasive sense of hopelessness will ensue, leaving most people dead, and the others without
the skills nor emotional standing to carry on. Action must be taken to prepare the population for
the inevitable eventuality of worldwide deterioration.
Project Plan:
The first step to adding this course would be to find out how interested staff and students are in
such a course. A college wide survey would need to be held. This survey would ask for interest
level, what they would like to see in such a course, and to find out how many future attendees of
the course there is on campus. Staff will also need to be surveyed for interest and ability in the
subject matter. These surveys will show the college how much funds and resources to allocate
for the course.
Once the college has completed all of the surveys it can begin to create the course. The school
based on student interest will decide how much money, how many teachers, and the class size.
The staff will also need to be trained. Local survival schools would serve this purpose. Survival
books that are already published would be used for textbooks, instead of writing a new textbook.
This would save funds and time that would make the course less of a liability.
The word will have to get out about the class. This will be accomplished by putting up fliers all
around the campuses four weeks before summer registration begins. Teachers will be asked to
announce the course in their classes, when they suggest students enroll in summer classes.
Emails, texts, canvas announcements and every other means of getting ahold of students will
be utilized to get the word out to students.
The class will be test run over a summer semester. This way the semester is shorter and class
sizes are smaller. The weather is also a lot more appetizing for outdoor activities during the
warm summer months.
After the first semester students and teacher will be surveyed to analyze the success of the
course. The course itself and the teachers will be evaluated to determine if its a worthwhile
investment for the college to continue.

HSEM 1567-001 Intro to Zombie Apocalypse Homeland Security- Full Term Lecture 3.0 credits
Course Description:

An introduction and overview of emergency/ disaster plan

and procedure as it pertains to a zombie apocalypse. This
course will provide students with a solid understanding of
how to develop an emergency plan, be aware of any and
all risks and hazards, and identify the best course of action
for the detrimental resources and other plan of action
needed
Prerequisite: None
In order to set this up we need to go through the curriculum process to create a new course but
need to first get in contact with an academic sponsor for this course. The academic sponsor will
be determined at a future point. Students who are excited to learn more about zombie
awareness and preparedness are strongly encouraged to sign up. This is an entry level course.

Costs and Benefits:

The cost of this class would be comparable to other SLCC classes. Professors have to be paid
and a classroom has to be used. Those would be the two major expenses of this course. The
total anticipated cost would be about $20,000. Each student enrolled in the class would only
have to pay about $500, which is a small number when we look at how much this class will
benefit the college. As mentioned earlier, students need to be prepared in the event of a zombie
apocalypse. Being educated on the matter means everything. Just like any other disaster, the
more prepared you are the better. In fact, your very life may be on the line. Here at SLCC our
goal would be to educate students about a zombie apocalypse which would allow them to
survive with minimal injuries and maximum comfort.
Like most classes, students would be required to use a textbook. There are two options we
have for this. We could either have a textbook written for the college or use survival books
already published. The first option is to write a new book. The book for this course would be
titled Practical Zombie Survival, and would cost about $100. This textbook provides a wealth of
information that would help reinforce the classroom learning. Reading the textbook would be
used mainly outside of class as a supplement. The second option is to use books already
published. Authors could be contacted for permission. Then professors could research an
adequate book for classroom use.
There would also be a small fee for in field training supplies. Each student would be required to
pay an extra $15 to cover the cost of these materials. These items include things like matches,
rope, and first aid supplies. Using these materials would give students an opportunity to gain
hands on experience, that couldnt be had any other way.
Not only would this class directly benefit SLCC students, it would also benefit members of the
community. If a zombie apocalypse does happen, the students who have completed this course
will be able to help others to live through it. Just think of helpless citizens running for their lives

and being ripped apart by zombies, versus a calm and collected effort toward survival. The
course would certainly teach students how to help other people survive a zombie apocalypse.
Another benefit of this class is that it would teach practical skills that can be used in everyday
life Things like how to overcome fear, and how to act in dangerous situations are a few
examples. Those are things that every student can take from this class, and use on a regular
basis.
Conclusion:
Unlike other courses, the ultimate purpose of this course is to give students a preparation for the
zombie apocalypse. After you go through this course, you will able to know basic skills that
ensure you can survive in the world full of zombie. Additionally, you can have a lot of other
benefits from this class. After all, you have only one life. Whether how efficient and useful the
class can bring to you, you shall not rely on it too much, this class does not guarantee you can
survive one hundred percent. Due to the multitude of potential circumstances, all is up to you.
You must always aware of the situation you are engaging in and can make the best decision.
