Students will be able to predict the shape and

polarity of a molecule and discuss why and
how this is biologically important.

Why & how do compounds form?

Why does shape matter?

Question of the Day

Learning Activities
Engage
Do-now warm-up for students to complete in notebooks:
Draw the Lewis structure for the following molecules, showing shape.
What shape is each one?
a) CS2
b) CH3Br
c) BCl3
d) OI2
Clearly focused and working pencils are going and it seems like
students are getting at the heart of the concept I definitely saw some
good lewis stureuves, the SHOWED the shape by how they drew
them, do you wan them to NAME the shape as well?
Are you surprised by the amount of time its taking to complete? Does
it seem about right or longer then you expected
NICE job going step by step through the process of Lewis Dot
I like hoe you metntion how the lone pairs effect the shape, KEEP
reinforcing that
Chlorinf can only form one bond make sure you add the sneteenc of
WHY that is
WHY is it trigonal planar- your student helps you clarify that
I need to hear MORE WHY it gets pushed apart
Doing the NH3 helps
You keep remiding them they would do why ne tey se nigrgrogen, as
sopped to the idea of wha the LONE pair does

Objective

Essential Question
Ch3Br
WHY is this one Tetradehdeal?
How do you know the difference between bent and linear I was going
to point this out but then your student
I think the heart of the WHY about shape is the lone pairs.I
think they are STARTING to get this but keep reinforcing it

25 min

Explain

Students will take notes in their notebooks on the following:

Polarity of molecules: review definition of polar molecule from
yesterday, I hear some good responses about this!
When you do the
and discuss how to draw. What steps are involved in determining
polarity? Examples: CH3OH, NH3, CH2O, H2O
when you do the methaonal you show the WAY to show ploratiy but
now how you dteremiened the polarity
NH3
Is nritdoe more electro negartive then oxygen- yes so they are
unequall areh
Reinforce WHY a differential in elcto neg causes unequal sharing
GOOD TIE IN of why we nned ot now shapr first
H2O
Is water poalr- yeahWHY???
CO2
There is Symmety in BOTH directions being pulleequally
POLAR means being pulled primarlily ONW direction
Student practice/try:
Draw the molecule showing shape and predict the polarity
a) CH5OH
b) CH2F2
c) CS2
d) NH4+
e) CH2(OH)2
f) CHCl3
g) CCl4
