INTRODUCTION:

TheCooperativemovementwasintroducedduringthe2ndfiveyear
planinLehDistrict.Howeveritwasonlyinthe4thfiveyearplan
theimpactoftheCooperativesstartedtoshowresults.Todaythe
Cooperativeoccupiesaveryimportantplaceintheeconomyofthe
District.Thisisasaresultofactivevoluntaryparticipationofthe
people,liberalfinancialassistance,andpositiveroleoftheDistrict
Administrationandrelentlessdedicatedserviceofthedepartmental
officials.ThemainobjectivesoftheCooperativesintheDistrictare
emphasizedbelow:
Toensureavailabilityofessentialcommoditiesthroughanetwork
ofDistrict,BlockandVillageLevelCooperativeSocieties.
TomarketfarmersproducethroughCooperativeMarketing
Societies.
ToensureavailabilityofChemicalandBiofertilizertothe
Farmers.
Topromotesaleoflocalhandicrafts.
Toprocure,processandMarketingofSeabuckthorn.
Togenerateincometolocaltransporters.
Toprocure,DehairandMarketinglocalPashmina.
Toencouragegroupofentrepreneurstotakeupanycommercial
activitybyregistrationofCooperativesunderJ&KSelfReliant
CooperativeAct.1999.

Tocarryouttheaboveactivitiesthereare99varioustypesof
CooperativeregisteredunderJ&KStateCooperativeSocietiesAct
1969/1989withliberalfinancialassistanceandmanyCooperatives
registeredunderJ&KSelfReliantCooperativeSocietiesAct1999

suchCooperativesaredoingexcellentbusinessandproviding
servicestoitsmembers.TheConsumerCooperativesregistered
underJ&KStateCooperativeSocietiesAct1960/89havesold
essentialcommoditiesworthRs:168.80LacsinRuralareasand
526.24LacsinUrbanareaofLehDistrictatmostreasonablerates
therebykeepingtheopenMarketpriceundercheckandmade
availableEssentialgoodsparticularlyinWintertimeduringthe
201011.ThroughConsumerCooperativeSocietyabout70tonesof
Vegetableshasbeenprovidedtothepublicduringwintermonthsat
reasonableratewiththeeffortsofDistrictAdministration.Thefive
MarketingSocietiesoftheDistrictmarketedfarmersVegetables
worthofRs:832.28LacswhichincludedPotatoOnionVegetables
FruitsetcandithasbenefitedthousandsofFarmersintheDistrict
andMarketingSocietyalsosuppliesFoddertothepeopleof
Changthangfortheircattles.TheCooperativesmadeavailable
FertilizerUrea,DAP,andMOPtothefarmersofLehDistrict
during201011about4200Qtls.ofUrea,3900Qtls.ofDAPand
200Qtls.ofMOPhasbeenstockedandrecentdaysofcropping
seasonithasbeendistributedtothefarmersofLehDistrict.The
LadakhTransportCooperativeSocietyhasbusinessturnoverof
Rs:2008.47Lacsduringtheyear201011resultingintogeneration
ofincometothelocaltransporters.Duringtheyear201011the
CooperativehasdonethebusinessofSeaBuckthorn,about5415
Kgs@Rs:22/ofSeaBuckthornbarrierswascollectedandpaid13
Lacstothepeople,and32tonesofSeaBuckthornpulphasbeen
sold@Rs:76/perKg.oftheworthofRs:25,68,760/.Therewasa
KVICprojectSFURTISeaBuckthornclusterProgrammeforthe
entrepreneurialdevelopmentthroughtrainingandcapacitybuilding
fortheunemployedyouthandfarmersabout30beneficiarieshave
beentrainedtilldate.TheCooperativeSocietiesisaimplementing
Agencyoftheproject,underthisProgrammeaSeaBuckthorn
squashisintroducinginthemarketunderthenamedandtittlesLeh
GoldwiththetechnicalsupportofDIHAR(DRDO).The
HandicraftCooperativewasabletosellvariousHandicraftitems
VizwoodcarvedlocaltableandPashminaShawls,Stolesetcworth

201011solddehairedpashminaoftheworthofRs:287.58Lacs.
RecentlytheAllChangthantPashminaGrowersCooperative
MarketingSocietyLtd.LehhastieupwiththeInternationalexport
PashminacompanynamedSASInternationaltosellPashminaat
goodpricetheirbytobenefittheGrowers.Withtheinterventionof
theCooperativesaftertheinstallationPashminadehairingplantat
With100%supportofMinistryofTextiles,GovernmentofIndia,
UNDPandLadakhAutonomousHillDevelopmentCouncilfew
yearsbackthepeopleofChangthanghaveaassuredmarketof
Pashminaandtheyhavebeenfreedfromtheclutchesofthegreedy
middlemanwhohavebeenexploitingthisinnocentcommunity
