Hello!

My name is Stacey Mattern, and I am so

excited to have the opportunity to work with
you. I grew up right here in East
Stroudsburg, and went to J. M. Hill when I
was a little girl! I lived in New York City for
the past three years, but moved back home
to be with my family. I love animals, and
have quite a few of
my own (four cats,
three dogs, and a
lizard!) and I
volunteer at a local
animal shelter. In my
free time, I like to
read, cook yummy
food, listen to music,
and take photos of my
pets, like this one! I want to be a teacher
because I believe that the best way to create
change in our world is to educate for the
future. I love to learn new things, and I hope
that you learn something new by the end of
this experience!
Favorite Quote
I am ready to face any challenges that
might be foolish enough to face me. This
quote is from my favorite TV show, The
Office, and was said by my favorite
character, Dwight Schrute. Although the
show is silly, I connect with this quote
because I believe that anything is possible,
and that anyone can accomplish their goals
with enough confidence and determination.
Goals for Learners
My hope is that by the end of this
experience, my students are more confident
in themselves and their abilities, and that
they walk away believing they can
accomplish anything. I hope my students

grow to know that they have the resources

and support to face any challenges they are
confronted with.
Educational Websites
Here is a list of some educational websites
that I recommend. They have fun games and
are easy to use!
http://www.funbrain.com/ - one of
my favorites to use when I was in
elementary school
http://pbskids.org/learn/ - lots of fun
games and activities
http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/ full of beautiful pictures and
information
Favorite Subject
My favorite subject in school is History,
especially American History. I love learning
about where our country and society got its
roots. My favorite historical topics are the
constitutional convention, the suffragist
movement, and social change in the 1960s.
My Advice
The best advice I can give you is to do the
best you can. No one will expect more than
you are able, and you may be surprised at
what you are capable of. If you need help,
ask for it! Its okay to not be sure of what a
question is asking, or what a word means.
Your teachers are here to help you learn and
grow! Likewise, if you see one of your
classmates is struggling, help them. They
will be grateful, and will remember your
kindness. Always remember that our
problems arent as big as they originally
seem, and that anything is possible. You can
face the challenges that you are confronted
with, and you can overcome them!

1. Topic
This newsletter will be used as a means of introducing myself to the students at J. M. Hill
Elementary that I will be tutoring. Likewise, it will give their guardians a way of knowing who is
working with their child(ren). The newsletter provides basic information about me, as well as
what my goals are for the experience. Hopefully this newsletter will be an efficient way of
opening discussion with the students, and they may be able to find common ground between us.
2. Audience
The audience for this publication is the group of elementary students, aged 8-11, I will be
working with in March, as well as their parents or guardians.
3. Type Faces Used
For the header font, I used Arial Black, a sans serif font, and for the text font I used Times
New Roman, a serif font.
4. Design Principles
Dominant Element The dominant element of the newsletter is the title at the top.
It is larger than the rest of the text, and is in a different color to help draw
attention to it.
Legibility The text is divided into two columns. The font size is 12pt for both
headings and text. The fonts used are easily read, and text is on either side of both
images, allowing for easy reading.
Alignment Text and headings are aligned to the left for consistency.
Grouping Text is grouped into six sections, distinguishable by their headings.
The groups are an introduction, my favorite quote, my goals for learners,
educational websites, favorite subject, and my advice for learners.
Balance The newsletter has two columns of equal length. The text is divided
between the two and helps to provide symmetry and balance.
Unity The text in the newsletter is used to introduce me to students and parents,
providing unity throughout the document. Also, the title heading spans over the
width of the document, helping to tie the document together.
