TEKS STANDARDS

5.A
5. number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to
determine the value of coins in order to solve monetary transactions. The student is
expected to:
(A) determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar; and
MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT/TECHNOLOGY
Graphs (laminated), graph tray, expo markers, coins
MODIFICATIONS
-Have Juan only count the pennies
-Only ask Juan about recognizing the pennies

Student Objective
Purpose of Lesson
INSTRUCTION
Relate to Prior Knowledge

-Who has a piggy bank at home?

-What does it look like?
-Today we are going to count coins and see which coins we
have the most of! We are going to make a graph so we can s
a picture
- The purpose of this activity is knowing how many coins you
have and to determine the coins to use in the store.
We have been talking about graphing. A graph always has a
title.
-Where does our title go?
Label the graph.
-D for dime

Direct Instruction (incl.

modeling e.g./non-e.g.)

Guided Practice

Independent Practice

-N for nickel
-Q for quarter
-P for penny
-Ms. Hayes has a piggy bank, and in her piggy bank she has
of these coins.
-When I go to the store, I like to use the coins that I have the
most of.
-Today we are going to count our coins in our piggy bank and
graph.
-Have students count the amount of coins.
- Separate the pennies, nickel, dimes and quarters
-Have students place each coin into the graph
-Students will label there own graphs
-The students will put there title, amount of coins, and numbe
-The student will orally answer teachers questions (higher lev

-Why do we need a title?

Higher Level Questions
-What coins has the most?
-What coin has the least?
CLOSURE (objective restated, link to future learning; incl. students)
- you did a great job today listening to Ms. Hayes.
- We talked about graphing, what was the title of our graph?
- What coin had the most?
- What coin had the least?
- Tomorrow we are going to compare the amount of each coin.
- Go back to desk and work independently.
LESSON EXTENSION & ELABORATION
Extension: The student that understand the coins and how much they are worth, will count the total
amount of money that I have. They will use addition and an one hundreds chart.
Elaboration: Students that do not understand will review the coin songs and touch the coin we are
talking about.
ASSESSMENT
The assessment is incorporated in the independent lesson. The teacher can check students
understanding of each coin back asking ho much each is worth. The teacher can check
understanding what coin has the most and least.
