Site Description
Overview
The Engaged Scholarship e-learning solution will consist of five modules. The modules will be
standalone (or self-contained) meaning that users can complete any or all of the modules. It is
recommended that users complete all five modules in the sequence provided, but they will be
built so that is not required. The modules will be housed on the UofM web servers and available
on the UofM public web site. They will be available to students, alumni, and the anyone with
Internet access. The goal will be to provide a flexible e-learning solution that seamlessly
integrates with the UofM web site.
Navigation
The content within each module will be presented in a linear fashion. Users will select a module
from the left navigation and then use forward and back buttons towards the bottom of each
page to move through the module. A progress bar will be located towards the bottom of the
page as well to show users where they are and how much they have left to complete within the
module. Breadcrumb navigation will be located towards the top of the page as another
navigation tool and location indicator. The navigation elements will be consistent with the rest
of the UofM web site.
Instructional Structure
Each module will begin with a short introduction video. The introduction video will be an
animated presentation with words, icons, images, and voiceover narration to set the stage for
what users will be learning. The video will also be used to provide brief directions to the user on
how to get started using the module. These videos will help each module standalone, as
mentioned earlier, by providing context for users. The rest of the instruction for each module
will consist of text, images, and self-check assessments. At the end of each module, users will

be able to complete an assessment to receive a certificate of completion which can be printed

and submitted to a faculty member if requested.
Assessments
Within each module there will be two different types of assessments. Throughout the modules,
self-check assessments will be included. These self-check assessments will be built using HTML,
CSS, and Javascript. The questions will be multiple-choice questions or open-ended reflection
questions that users can respond to and get immediate feedback. For the open-ended
reflection questions, users will be presented with a question and then asked to type in their
response. Once they've typed in their response, they will be able to click a button to reveal the
correct response. Because it will be impossible to determine whether or not the user has
entered the correct answer definitively, the student will need to compare what they've entered
with the correct response. These formative assessments will be used to engage the student in
the module and provide them with feedback on how they are progressing.
The second type of assessment will be a summative assessment at the end of each module.
These assessments will be built using Google Forms. The Google Form will be embedded within
the last page of each module. Once users completed the final assessment, they will submit their
responses and receive an email. A PDF file will be attached to the email they receive. This PDF
file will include their responses on the assessment and serve as documentation that they have
completed the module. To create these assessments, we will create the Google Forms using a
generic Google Account that the Engaged Scholarship will have access to so they can access the
data and make revisions as needed in the future.
User Support
To support users throughout the module, a Help page will be accessible from all pages by
clicking a link in the left navigation menu. This Help page will provide information on how to get
started, frequently asked questions, and contact information. The site will be built using
standard web technologies used on the UofM website so we aren't anticipating complex
technical issues.
Site Management & Updates
As mentioned earlier, the modules will be housed on the UofM web servers. To build the site
and modules, we will be using OU Campus which is the content management system supported
and maintained by the U of Memphis IT department. OU Campus is a user-friendly system that
allows anyone at the U of Memphis with proper permissions to update and maintain web
pages. This system will allow members of the Engaged Scholarship Committee to maintain and
update the modules on an as needed basis after the completion of this project.

Interface
The overall design and navigation will adhere to the existing UofM website design and
navigation. Below are details on the specific interface elements.
