The Social Issue I address for my annotated bibliography is regarding why the vast majority of
Waste Managements/corporations are established in poor communities and what the
communities who are made up of African Americans and Latinos, affected by the corporations
are doing.
Boer, J. Tom et al.. Is There Environmental Racism? the Demographics of Hazardous Waste in
Los Angeles County. Social Science Quarterly 78.4 (1997): 793810. Web
The issue addressed in the article is: Why are the vast majority of Waste
management/facilities established in poor communities. The article Elaborates on what
determines the establishment of waste corporations in poor communities that are composed
of minorities who the majority are African American and Latinos by analyzing the locations
of Waste Managements/corporations in the Los Angeles County. With further studies, it
was concluded industrial land use and manufacturing employment matter when building a
mass waste corporations and it was also concluded that poor communities show little
economic activity while wealthy communities have the political and economic power to
resist negative environmental externalities from occurring. Throughout the reading, I
learned that the argument stating poor communities do not demonstrate or stand up against
large corporations polluting their communities is true because they are not informed and
are kept from knowing how living in a community where waste corporations are settled can
generate health issues. I encountered this source through the CSUN library.
Christensen, Kim, and Jessica Garrison. "Exide Plant's Closure Sought; Air Quality Regulators
Take Initial Steps to Halt Lead Smelting, Citing Toxic Emissions." Los Angeles TimesOct 19
2013. ProQuest. Web. 11 Apr. 2016 .
The social issue addressed is regarding the air pollution in Vernon from the Exide
technologies corporation and what the corporation is dong to fix it. Since the Exide
technologies failed to keep the pollutants from escaping to the environment, The Exide
corporation will have to shut down until its pollution control systems are controlled.

Furthermore the company will have to prove to the air district that it operates its vernon
plants safely for the health and safety of the community before being able to continue
processing any further. The source used is credible because I found it in the CSUN library.
When reading the articles/journals great awareness of what is happening around my
community makes me want to be involved with the situation and find more ways to help
the community be aware of the issue as well and take action.
Garrison, Jessica. "Lead is found in Soil Near Exide; State Orders Battery Plant to do More
Testing After High Levels are found at Homes and Preschool." Los Angeles TimesMar 11
2014. ProQuest. Web. 11 Apr. 2016 .
The social issue in the article is regarding the high levels of lead found in soil of homes and
a preschool near a battery recycling plant named Exide located in Vernon. After running
tests of those whose homes were affected and attended the schools nearby, the results were
alarming and the state demanded Exide technologies to organize a plan to protect children
and pregnant women exposed to the toxic substances. When reading the article I was
shocked because I live 15 minutes away from Vernon and this issue also affects my
neighborhood. However, although this issue was addressed only a couple miles away from
where I live, I dont recall an act being organized to fight and demand services to protect
our community as well. I encountered this source through the CSUN library.
Scauzillo, Steve. "Troubled Exide Battery-Recycling Plant in Vernon Hit with 8 New
Violations." Daily BreezeJan 29 2015. ProQuest. Web. 11 Apr. 2016 .
The social issue addressed in the article is regarding the air pollution in Vernon from the
Exide technologies corporation and what the corporation has done to fix and restrict all the
violations. The article briefly summarizes through the 8 violations done by the Exide
corporations failure to control and preserve air pollutants and how hazardous it is for the
communities that live around the corporation. From all the articles Ive read, this article
was the first to mention the city I live in as one of many cities to be affected. This source is
reliable because I read it from the CSUN library.
