Working Hard, Being Diligent and Not Wasting Time as Missionaries

When I was a young man on the ranch in Wyoming, we put up hay for the cattle to eat
during the cold winters. It was clean, pleasant work which I really didnt mind. However,
whenever it rained, we couldnt put up the hay because it would mildew if put it in bales wet.
We always hoped that we would get a vacation from the work if it rained-----however, Dad
always had a different idea. If it was raining, we were required to go into the field and pick up
big rocks which could damage the farm machinery. We hated this most menial of tasks and
always felt put upon when we had to pick up rocks. Years later, I came to the realization that
it was never about the rocks. Dad was making sure that we always had something to do, that
we werent lazy, that we knew how to work and that we didnt waste any time. I am so grateful
that my father taught me how to work hard and not waste time.
Missionary work requires great effort and is often hard emotionally and physically. When we
accepted our call from the Lord we essentially turned our life over to Him for 18-24 months. It
became His timenot ours. We promised that we would do His work with all of our heart
(spiritual force), might (will, desire, attitude), mind (intellect) and strength (physical). (D&C
4:1-2) Indeed your diligence in missionary work is an expression of your love for the Lord
(Matt 5:15). A diligent missionary works efficiently and effectively. When you are diligent you
find joy and satisfaction in His work. President Benson has said, There is no greater
exhilaration or satisfaction than to know after a hard day, that we have done our best. A
diligent missionary does many good things of his own free willhe doesnt have to be
commanded in all things. (D&C 58:26-29). A hard-working consecrated missionary keeps
going even after he/she is tired, not wanting to waste a precious moment. A hard-working
missionary plans regularly and effectively and then works the plan. Again, President Benson
has stated that, one of the greatest secrets of missionary work is WORK! If a missionary
works, he will get the Spirit; if he gets the Spirit, he will teach by the spirit; and if he teaches by
the Spirit, he will touch the hearts of the people and he will be happy. There will be no
homesickness, no worrying about families, for all time and talents and interest are centered on
the work of the ministry. Bishop David Burton has said that, Work is not a matter of need
alone: it is a spiritual necessity. To work honestly and productively brings contentment and a
sense of self-worth.
Multiple scriptures make it very clear that the idler (lazy disciple) will have no place in the
kingdom of God (D&C 68:31, 75:29). Work is an eternal principle that characterizes the truly
committed follower of Christespecially in missionary work. It is good to remember that it is
called, appropriately, missionary WORK, not missionary play, missionary relax, missionary do

what I want, missionary sleep a lot, missionary recreate, or missionary waste time. There are
many ways in which a missionary can waste time or be lazy in the work.
Examples might include: making multiple trips to the Church to check e-mail, spending too
much time in members homes, taking too much time in a lesson, lingering over a meal at a
members house, planning poorly and not have a back -up appointment, not leaving piso in
time in the morning and medioda, spending excessive amounts of time at the Church with no
missionary purpose, attending ward activities that are not focused on missionary work with no
investigator attending, not planning our time wisely, etc. Usually the Spirit prompts us when we
are wasting the Saviors time. Responding to those promptings shows your commitment and
dedication to giving the Savior the very best that you have. It is my prayer that every single
day and every single hour we will give the Lord the best that we have. It is, after all, His time
not ours. May we all work to be the very best, most dedicated disciples we possibly can.
May we plan and use our time wisely. And, may we be hard-working, committed disciples
in this work that is more important than any other on the earth. I love the great missionaries of
El Faro. There are so many wonderful companionships that work hard, diligently and well
every day. I know that ALL of us have the power and capacity to commit to hard work and
diligence in the work of bringing souls to Christ. May the Lord bless you as you do so.
Diligentemente,
President Merril T Dayton

Discernment vs Judgment

Discernment is understanding the deeper reasons why things happen. Solomon asked
the Lord for discernment when he could have asked for anything. In 1 Kings 3:9 it says,
"Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart...that I may be able to DISCERN
between good and bad". An understanding heart listens to the whisperings of the spirit
and follows the words of God found in the scriptures.
There are many examples in the scriptures of people who were able to discern the
thoughts and intentions of others. Ammon was able to discern the thoughts of the king.
(Alma 18:18) The Savior demonstrated discernment often. He could often discern what
the Pharisees and Sadducees were thinking. He was able to love others, to discern the
wrongs they had done and still lift and strengthen them. We can always show love to
others, realizing that we have not walked in another persons shoes and do not know their
past and what they have gone through. Very often people do what they do because of
an unmet need in their life. Wrong choices made by people are often a result of
unresolved guilt, bitterness, or lack of purpose in life.
A person who discerns examines his own life and learns from past mistakes and the
mistakes of others. A discerning person has the ability to distinguish between what is
good and what is evil, in order to make wise decisions. A discerning person will ask
many questions, get facts and try to trace problems to their causes. A discerning person
is usually a person who loves, wants to help others solve the challenges and struggles
they are facing by giving wise council. A judgmental person is one who forms opinions
and then looks for evidence to support those opinions. A judgmental person very often
overlooks his own faults and focuses on the faults and weaknesses of others.

Message From Hermana Dayton

We can apply discernment in our lives as missionaries by:
--Praying daily for an understanding heart
--Pray not only FOR the Spirit, but UNTIL the Spirit
--Studying the scriptures, praying daily to have the Spirit with us to be able to discern
the thoughts and feelings of others
--Understanding that selfishness leads to a breakdown in companionship relationships
--Asking thoughtful questions to investigators to understand why they are struggling to
accept the Gospel
--Not judging too hastily the people we see and meet on the streets
--Learning from our past experiences and the experiences of others
--Trying to discern why your companion is struggling instead of cavalierly judging
him/her.
President Dayton and I love you dearly! We so enjoyed our time with you during
personal interviews and came away, once again, inspired by the wonderful missionaries
of El Faro. Thank you for your goodness, for your righteous desires to bring others to
Christ and to be faithful, obedient missionaries. We are grateful for each one of you and
will continue to pray that the Lord's choicest blessings will be with you.

him. Every single thing about him

was a miracle and an
indescribable blessing from the
Lord. The baptism was absolutely
beautiful and the spirit was present.
The crowning jewel was after his
confirmation when he told us about
how he was to now help others
come into the church and the
opportunity to hear his powerful
testimony about the church. He is
still developing spiritually, but he
has the desire to stay on the
straight and narrow path and
always prays to be undeviated. He
was absolutely a miracle in every
single sense of the word.

So first things first, Baba got

baptized!! :) He finally kicked his
smoking habit and prepared
himself to be worthy of baptism!
When he walked out of the
bathroom in his white clothes he
was just beaming with a smile from
ear to ear. It has been amazing
seeing the atonement working in
his life and seen how he literally
shines with the light of Christ now.
And even more exciting, his wife
and son came! She has been pretty
apprehensive about the church so
we were all praying she would
come to support his baptism and
she did! Not only did she come, she
was crying as he was baptized! I
know the spirit really touched her
which is exactly what she needed
to open her heart to receiving the
charlas. On Sunday, we arrived
around 9:30 to see that not only
was Baba 30 minutes early, he was
there in a suit with his wife and son!!
Seeing them sitting together in
Sacrament meeting for his
confirmation was such a beautiful
sight. The goal is now for Baba to
receive the Aaronic priesthood
next Sunday and then be able to
baptize his wife.. Baptism is
always a miracle but it's even
better when it opens the door to a
family being sealed together in the
temple.
