The positions of two consecutive loud sounds depend on the separation of the two arms of turning fork
The further the separation between the two sources of sound, the closer the distance between two
consecutive loud sounds
i) To investigate the relationship between the separation between two coherent sound sources and the
distance between two consecutive loud sounds
ii) Manipulated variable: Separation of two coherent sound sources, a
Responding variable: Distance between two consecutive loud sounds, x
Fixed variable: Frequency of sound wave // wavelength of sound wave // distance between the two
coherent sources of sound waves and the place where the interference pattern is observed
iii) Cathode ray oscilloscope (C.R.O), audio signal generator, two identical loudspeakers, microphone,
stick, metre rule and table.

v) 1. The apparatus is set up as shown in diagram above.

2. The separation of the two loud speaker, a, is set to 1.00 m.
3. The positions of two successive loud sounds is determined and the distance, x, between them is
measured with a metre rule.
4. The experiment is repeated for values of a = 1.50 m, 2.00 m, 2.50 m, and 3.00 m
vi) The results are tabulated as follows:
a/m
x/m
1.00
1.50
2.00
2.50
3.00
vii) The graph of the distance between two consecutive loud sounds, x, against the separation of loud
speakers, a
