I am at American school of creative science and I am observing

grade two. While observing, I noticed that there are 6 students with
ADHD. ADHD stands for attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity.
ADHD is a problem of not being able to focus, being overactive, not
being able to control behavior, or a combination of these "is
a developmental disorder characterized by distractibility, hyperactivity, impul
sive behaviors, and the inability to remain focused on tasks or activities
(Kowal, 2003). Researches mentioned that ADHD doesnt mean that the child
is lazy or has poor academic skills. It means that the child is in need of
special assistance. In this essay, I will choose one boy with ADHD and
describe his behavior. Also, accommodation and modification strategies that
the teacher used, specific learning objectives and devices that will help
ADHD students in learning.
Details about the boy
Abdurrahman is eleven years old and he is from Jordan . He is in the class
with 26 students. Abdurrahman is a kind and wonderful boy. He is
creative, intuitive and highly intelligent. Unfortunately, his
parents ignoring him , dont listen to him and telling him
negative points so, this affected on his behavior and contribute to
make him ADHD students. This boy has trouble studying for long
periods of time. Moreover, excessive leaving his seats, running
or climbing around in inappropriate situations. In addition, he is
unable to follow on and finish tasks. Also, difficulty in waiting
turns (talk out of turn). Finally, he interrupts on others.
Accommodation and modification used in the classroom.
The teacher can create multiple challenges
students with ADHD by integrating the
following two components; accommodation
modification.

Accommodation is a tool or procedure

provides equal access to instruction
assessment for students with
disabilities (Strom, 2014)

for
and
that
and

First of all, my monitor school teacher applied accommodation while

teaching, for example, minimize the distractions and disruptions of
1 | Page

Abdurrahman by seating him away from windows and away from the
door so, she can monitor him visually and physically. Furthermore,
Abdurrahman suffers from following instructions so, she gave him a
clear, specific instructions one at a time and repeat as necessary,
according to Kewely, who mentioned that" the teacher should use
simple, clear and direct instruction and should try to give only one
instruction at time" (Educators perception on teaching children with
adhd, 2013) . Also, to keep Abdurrahman attention focused on
learning because he easily distracted, she makes the process of
learning fun by playing a memory card. From searching, reading and
studying the special education needs course with Miss Anttoinette
Wiseman ,I believed that these strategies are great but it needs some
adjustment. For instance, Abdurrahman has difficulty following
instruction which may
look like he understand and might even write down instructions, but
actually he isnt able to do what has been asked. As a result, the
teacher has to allow Abdurrahman to do one step and then come back
to find out what they should do next. Also, print the instruction and
provide pictures for him. And because Abdurrahman distracted easily, I
propose to integrate physical motion in a lesson or act out the story
because Abdurrahman is hyperactive , need to move and this will
attract them to concentrate during the whole lesson.

Modification: "is a change in what a student is tough or expected to

learn"

The teacher used a modification during the lesson in various ways. First of
All, the teacher, provide Abdurrahman different hands on materials and give
him different topics than his classmates. For example, in math class ,he was
doing counting to work on multiplication while classmates move on to
fractions, Abdurrahman did not like that and doesnt want to do it, So, I
believed that the teacher has to deal with it by encouraging him to do this
task and giving him another task if he finish. Furthermore, the teacher gave
Abdurrahman different homework problems than peers and she assessed
him using different standard than the one for classmates. In addition, the
teacher praised Abdurrahman when he did excellent behaviors such as,
listening carefully to the teacher, being quite and doing the home work. She
used different ways to praise him such as, smile to him , and saying:
excellent, fantastic and great. As a result, it
diminishes the behavioral issues and change
Abdurrahman negative behavior to positive According
to Skinner ,who believed that behavior cause by
environment this means that teacher can exchange
the bad behavior to good behavior. While teaching, I
used different kind of praising which is giving
Abdurrahman, some roles in the class ,such as, the leader of the group,
bookkeeper, and a tidy up captain. In addition, post Abdurrahman works on
the wall.
Specific objective:
IEP is an Individualized Education Plan that designed to address each
students unique leaning issue which includes specific educational goals. IEP
help teacher and parents to figure out strategies to support students
succeed in school by sorting out the childs strengths and weaknesses and
how to deal with them. Teachers have to list objectives for her special
education need and here are various objectives for Abdurrahman according
to different domains. (Baumel, 2010).
Behavior ,motor and physical domain.

Abdurrahman will be able to sit 5 minutes on his seat to do the

activity.

Abdurrahman is unable to sit in his chair and he is moving a lot. The

following techniques can support him to sit in his chair. First of all, tell
Abdurrahman that if you sit 5 minutes on your seat and do the activity, you
will have a chance to go out for a walk. In addition, if he follows and
responses to that praised him by using different strategies such as, giving
him stickers, verbal feedback for example, great, fantastic. Another strategy
that could be very helpful for achieving this objective is designed activity

that interested Abdurrahman, which will make him enthusiastic to do it and

sit on his seat. To make sure that Abdurrahman is achieving this goal I will
observe him and use a checklist.
Cognitive domain

Abdurrahman will have the ability to organize his homework and other
daily assignments.

Abdurrahman has difficulty focusing their attention on assigned tasks.

However, the following strategies can help Abdurrahman. First of All, provide
Abdurrahman with color-coded folders to help organize assignments for
different academic subjects (e.g., reading, mathematics, social science, and
science). Also, assign him a partner to help record homework and other
seatwork in the assignment notebook and file worksheets and other papers
in the proper folders. Finally, use visual aids as reminders of subject material
such as charts, lists, pie graphs, and diagrams .To make sure that
Abdurrahman mastered this skills, I will regularly review the students
progress through progress reports.
Communication and language domain

Abdurrahman will be able to read without difficulties. (education,

2008)

Abdurrahman is unable to focus and distracted easily as a result, he faced

difficulty in reading children with ADHD may experience difficulties in
reading (Educators perception on teaching children with adhd, 2013). There
are various ways to help Abdurrahman in reading , for example, establish a
fixed time each day for silent reading (e.g., drop everything and read). In
addition, designed a paired reading activities, Abdurrahman will be with
another partner who is a power reader. So, they will take turn in reading
orally, listening to each other and correcting the mistakes if they have.
Finally, encourage Abdurrahman to read stories and then retell a story to the
classmates. To make sure that Abdurrahman has mastered this skill, I will
evaluate him by using checklist. If he mastered the reading skills, motivate
him to read more books by using challenge reading .. see the attachment
below
Assistive devices
I will provide examples of assistive devices that will help Abdurrahman and
ADHD students.

Jumping device.
The idea of jumping machine is similar to the smart board, but there
are some differentness. The machine will be on the floor, include
different materials and activities for various courses such as, math
science, language arts, reading activities . Also, it will engage students
because it has colorful pictures and audios. Students will play the
activity by reading the question and answer it by jumping on the
answer. For example, 4+3 is .., they will jump on the
number 7.
IPad and computer.

These two devices have lots of educational online games. Students will
turn on the iPad or computer and choose a topic to play. Students will read
the question and answer the question by touching it or move their hands.
These devices have lots of advantages. First of all, it will benefit
Abdurrahman because it has lots of moving and jumping. Moreover, it
integrates fun and learning at the same time as a result, students will feel
happy, enjoyed and motivate to learn. According to krashen, who
mentioned that when students are happy, feel comfortable this will open
the knowledge door for them and will motivate to learn. Also, it will
support Abdurrahman to learn independently . According to Piaget ,who
believed that " (Moony, 2000). students learn best when they actually
doing the work by themselves instead of giving the explanation by
adults". Finally, other students can use this device to learn because it
includes different learning styles such as, visual, auditory and kinesthetic
learners.
To conclude, teachers can do their best to help children with ADHD to learn
effectively, but parents involvement can dramatically improve a childs
education. The parents, can work with their child and teacher to implement
practical strategies for learning both inside and out of the classroom. As a
result, ADHD students will have perfect learning.
