SUPPORT FOR THE ATOMIC BOMB.

Caroline Lanford.
The Hiroshima bomb came as a response to no Japanese surrender, it saved more lives
than it killed and set a warning for all other nations who developed nuclear power. It is a
common opinion that the Hiroshima bomb was an act of unwarranted, rash and American-like
violence. However the Hiroshima bomb was anything but rash.

One of the first arguments made against the Hiroshima bomb is that it was out of the blue
and a random act of mass murder. In reality, the U.S. had warned Japan that if they did not
surrender, Japan would be totally destroyed. It was to spare the Japanese people from utter
destruction that the ultimatum of July 26 was issued at Potsdam. Their leaders promptly rejected
that ultimatum.(Truman, Press Release.) According to the History Network, they rejected the
four-power ultimatum, feeling as former prime minister and navy"moderate," Admiral Yonai
Mitsumasa, said to his secretary on July 28,"There is no need to rush." Though the U.S. didnt
tell Japan that they would unleash atomic power, Japan had been warned. The U.S. even ensured
that all Japanese military forces would be safe and not convicted. The Japanese military forces,
after being completely disarmed, shall be permitted to return to their homes with the opportunity
to lead peaceful and productive lives. (Potsdam Declaration).

The Hiroshima Bomb was also meant to save lives. It was estimated that if the U.S didnt
drop the bomb, more lives would have been lost, Japanese and American, than if the bomb was

dropped. We can see how many people wouldve died with the following quote. The unlucky
600,000 Japanese POWs taken by the Soviets suffered horrendously, being interned in labor
camps where they died at an appalling rate (roughly 10 percent by some estimates). (Keck).
This shows that if the bomb had not been dropped then 600,000 POWs couldve, and most
likely wouldve, perished. According to the U. S. Strategic Bombing Survey: The Effects of the
Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, June 19, 1946 only 140,000 people died in the
Hiroshima bombing. The Hiroshima Bomb saved at least 460,000 lives.
The Hiroshima bomb was designed to warn the world of the horrors in nuclear power.
This bomb showed the world what would happen if nuclear power was ever used again, and to
this day, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs are the only nuclear bombs ever used in warfare.
The message stuck.
In conclusion, the Hiroshima Bomb was a rational response to no surrender, saved more
400,000 lives and warned the other powers of the world what would a nuclear war would look
like.
