Extended Inquiry Project Proposal
For my extended inquiry project, my group and I chose to expand our knowledge
on the topic of gay rights. For my essay, the subject I will be focusing on is gay marriage.
This will include the point of view of different religions and what these religions say
about the topic. This topic has affected most people because of the new laws that have
made gay marriage legal. Younger generations are more accepting of the gay controversy
compared to older generations, who were existent during the AIDs epidemic and where
they thought it came from. I wish to inform my readers about the topic of gay rights and
to show how it has changed throughout the years.
In the past, gay rights were nearly nonexistent. Being gay was frowned upon and
if you knew someone who was gay, people would not think of you the same in some
cases, people were shunned. Before researching the topic further, I already knew that
AIDs was a major controversy and was known as the gay disease. This disease was
given its name because people thought that only gay people could get it and even doctors
thought it was transmitted by air and if you were in contact with someone that was gay,
then you would get it. After this controversy appeared, newer studies showed that it was
transmitted through sexual contact including homosexual and heterosexual sexual
contact. This overreaction created the discrimination we have seen in the past and still see
today. In todays society, gay rights are more accepted and gay marriage has been

legalized in all fifty states as of June 26th, 2015. This information is common sense to me
because I was always curious as a child and would always ask my parents questions
about anything.
I am very interested in this topic because this has been something Ive wanted to
learn more about and I am glad my group and I chose this topic. I want my essay to
inform people about how being gay is now more accepted and that we do not have the
same beliefs that we did in the past. This is something that affects everyone because most
of our generation has seen changes about change about to concerning this topic and we
accept changes quicker than older generations. The way I am going to approach my topic
is that I am going to talk about gay marriage and how children and religion views it. I am
interested in educating people about this topic because even if it has been legalized in
every state, some people are still against it because of what their religion says about it.
I have a several of important questions I want to find the answers to with my
research:
1. Why do our beliefs force us to not be able to sometimes change our opinions on
todays new new?
2. Some mention gay marriage is an abomination because the bible says so,
meanwhile it mentions to love and accept everyone the way they are. Why is that?
3. Why were gay rights not as accepted in the past as they is are today?
4. Why do some religions and people think gay rights should be nonexistent?
5. Why does society say that there is a correct way of living and why is this way
correct or right?
I think I will find the answers to my questions by researching in depth the topic
and how religion and children view gay marriage. I have already found one film
relating back to religion and peoples point of view from what the church and bible

say and one video where children watch two videos of couples of the same sex
getting engaged and it includes their reactions and what they thought of it. I will also
be looking through articles I find at the schools library and online.
My topic is talked about often and there is a lot of information about it. Gay rights
is a huge topic and includes things other than marriage. My group and I narrowed it
down to gay marriage because only a year ago, it was made legal in all states. We also
chose this topic because it is still a fairly new topic to talk about because more and
more people are starting to accept it. I do not think my subject will be too broad, I
think this is a very talked about subject and that I will find all the answers I need to. If
it is the case and my subject has little information, I will look more into it and use all
the resources I am surrounded by to find my answers. I will go to the schools library
and search for books, look on the librarys site for online articles, use Google to find
scholarly articles, information, and videos, and I will ask my peers questions relating
it to the subject.
