Positive Behavior Support Plan Rational

The Positive Behavior Support Plan required me to identify a student within my

internship classroom who displayed undesirable behaviors. I was then able to complete a
functional behavior assessment in order to develop a plan for implementing replacement
behaviors. Throughout this process, the identified student received multiple positive behavior
supports to ensure that the replacement behaviors would be generalized and maintained. This
artifact connects to CEC standards 1 (Learner Development and Individual Learning
Differences), 2 (Learning Environments), 5 (Instructional Planning and Strategies), and 7
(Collaboration).
I was able to gain knowledge and skills in learner development and individual learning
differences (standard 1) by identifying the functions for my students behavior, and devising a
plan that was tailored to meet his unique instructional and behavioral needs. I expanded on my
skills with creating learning environments (standard 2) that are safe, functional, and designed to
meet each students needs. For example, I made sure that my student had preferential seating to
allow him to see the Promethean Board; his desk was placed at a table with peers who would
support and engage him. This artifact allowed me to enhance my skills with instructional
planning and strategies (standard 5) because I had to craft a positive behavior support plan that
incorporated effective strategies aimed at replacing his inappropriate behaviors. I also had to
make sure that my instruction was geared toward the students learning style and preferences.
Regarding collaboration (standard 7), I informed all of the students teachers about the behavior
support plan so that they would incorporate it into their instruction. I also worked with my
mentor teacher to devise replacement behaviors that would be attainable for the student.
The student that I identified for this project benefitted from my mastery of the standards
in many ways. He was able to make tremendous gains with replacing his inappropriate
behaviors. He has maintained and generalized his replacement behaviors; I receive positive
feedback from this parents and teachers about how well he is doing. By completing this artifact,
I learned how to implement a successful behavioral intervention plan which will guide me in my
future career as a special educator. I now possess more tools and creative strategies that will
allow me to meet the unique needs of my future students.
