Inquiry
While Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa become more prominent in society, the
statistics for those suffering from an eating disorder have increased. The increasing popularity
for this severe disorder leads me to discover, What are the contributing factors to Anorexia and
Bulimia Nervosa? I also have shown interest in this topic, because in the past I have displayed
eating disorder tendencies, which has driven me to want to learn more about the development of
Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa.
Statistics show that 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from an eating disorder
in the United States. This statistic not only reveals that women are more prone to developing an
eating disorder than men, but also shows the severity of eating disorders in the United States.
Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa are disorders that can be potentially life threatening and require
extensive treatment for recovery, which makes these disorders very dangerous to individuals. As
I realize the severity of these disorders, I believed it was important for me to dig deeper into the
topic and discover the contributing factors that may lead to the development of one of these
disorders.
Depending on the person, the contributing factors that result in the development of
Anorexia or Bulimia will vary. Throughout my research, I found that these disorders can
develop through biological/genetic, sociological, and psychological factors. Biological/genetic
factors may include: the Body Mass Index (BMI) of the individual, the symptoms they exhibit

from the eating disorder, the eating habits of the individual, and the difference in the first
chromosome. Sociologically, family and culture are the two biggest contributing factors to an
eating disorders development, while psychologically, the metal fixation on perfectionism and
warped body image are contributing factors as well. The metal fixation on perfectionism and the
desire to be thin has been created, due to the views on women in society. Now, women in society
as seen as beautiful when they are thin, so women strive to become as thin as the can so they will
be viewed as beautiful. Family is a contributing sociological factor for the reason that the raising
of an individual can lead to the development of an eating disorder due to malnutrition at a young
age, having more siblings, or having someone in your family that has suffered or is suffering
from an eating disorder can contribute to the development.
In addition, eating disorders can be linked to anxiety, depression, and stress. This shows
to be true, because according to a study, patients with the most depression showed lower BMI
and weight. While depression can lead to low BMI and body weight, it can also result in affected
sleep patterns. In a study, statistics reveal that 56% of individuals that were studied showed signs
of major depression disorder, while another study also revealed that depressions with evident in
patients whose depression lasted for over 21 months.

What am I doing well?

I know my topic very well and know what points I need to add into my paper.

Concerns?
1. Is my paper going to end up being long enough?
2. Do I have enough supportive details in my writing?
3. When do I need to use in text citations?
