Colorado Academic History/Social Studies Standards Standard 1:

The historical method of inquiry to ask questions, evaluate primary and secondary
sources, critically analyze and interpret data, and develop interpretations defended by evidence
from a variety of primary and secondary sources
Standard 2:
Analyze the key concepts of continuity and change, cause and effect, complexity, unity
and diversity over time
Objectives:
Demonstrative Goals:

Students will be able to identify the major legislation associated with the Vietnam War
Students will be able to recall dates and times relevant to the Vietnam War
Students will be able to explain the international powers that contributed to the
occurrence of the Vietnam War
Students will be able to identify key piece of information from both primary and
secondary sources.
Students will be able justify the actions of both the Vietnamese and the Americans

The objectives above, all help students engage in differentiating high level of thinking about
the topic of the Vietnam War. Instead of just looking at the Vietnam War from the typical
American viewpoint, the class will look at the war from both sides; the Western/predominately
American version, as well as the Vietnam viewpoint, from both civilians and government
officials. Throughout the lesson, students will be able to demonstrate proficiency both with
formal assessments and very informal assessments. The formal assessments will rely on a pretest and post-test, as well as several mini projects and in class activities the class will complete
throughout the unit. With two major assessments in play, one being a test the other a Mini
lesson in which the students must create a technological way of lecturing to the rest of the class,
and then provide an activity to check for understanding.
