Source 1: Body Scanners, Pat-downs violate law and Privacy

Rotenberg, Marc. "Body Scanners, Pat-downs Violate Law and Privacy." CNN. 2010.
Accessed March 17,

The Source talks a lot about how the new development and use of airport body
scanners are an invasion of privacy. The article uses a bold leading statement of
Body scanners that peer through clothes are deployed in airports across the
country to try and skew your opinion of the scanners. The general public often
react before looking at all of the facts of a given situation. However, in this situation
Im not sure people are over reacting. The body scanners that are use are very
invasive and too many people are too invasive. Personally I feel that airports go
over the top in regards to security. Every single time I go to the airport with my
brother because of the fact that he is deaf and has a cochlear implant he cannot go
through metal detectors. So the TSA Agents frisk him and test him for radiation.
Sometimes the safety thing is a little too overdone in the airports. But the question
still remains, is the relative added safety worth the invasion of privacy. This source
speaks more on how people feel having to use these body scanners than on
whether they are effective.
Source 2: Apple vows to resist FBI demand to crack iPhone linked to San
Bernardino attacks
"Apple Vows to Resist FBI Demand to Crack IPhone Linked to San Bernardino
Attacks." Washington Post.
Accessed March 17, 2016.
The source above talks a lot about the privacy issues that the US government
encroaches on in many different situations. In this instance the US government was
asking apple to create a backdoor into the Apple I Phone in order to assist with
breaking into a phone during an investigation. This investigation happened to be a
terrorists cell phone and when Apple said that they would not assist the US
government in this issue it created a very large uproar. The issue is that doing this
backdoor into the Apple software would create a void in Apples prime principals and
federal privacy laws. Apple as a company uses privacy as one of its key selling
points and remains firm on the belief that their products are very safe from privacy
invasion. The government was seeking Apples help because the terrorist phone was
locked and or encrypted and they were trying to find out who and if anyone else had
assisted the terrorist plot and attack. This is a very current and debated issue in
terms of whether safety or privacy is more important.
Source 3: Privacy VS Security, Battle Lines Drawn
Tam, Pui-wing. "Privacy vs. Security, Battle Lines Drawn." The New York Times. 2016.
Accessed March

This article is short and brief. The article directly relates to the previous one in
regards to the Apple vs US in the unlocking of a terrorist cell phone. The article
mentions how ever since Edward Snowden released information regarding how the
US government has been spying on its citizens tensions between tech companies
and the government have been high. This article shows a brief example of how the

American people have reacted to the releasing of the NSA documents. The
American people seem to be firmly focused on their privacy more than their safety.
However this is not how every American citizen feels about the topic. The safety
and privacy debate has been a very controversial one in recent times and is an
issue that is evident in many given situations.
Source 4: Dilemmas of the Internet age: privacy vs. security
"Dilemmas of the Internet Age: Privacy vs. Security." CNN. Accessed March 17,
2016.
Part of the leading statement of this article is the Internet is no longer limited to
your desktop and this could not be more agreeable. The world around us is filled
with technology and is constantly becoming more and more part of our everyday
lives. The world around us is filled with technology and is becoming increasingly
more involved. The main issue with the technological boost in the United States
however is internet and system privacy. Many companies struggle with the issue of
how to keep their technology uncheckable and or UN breakable in the internet
world. The issue is that because so many common systems that people rely on are
internet systems, People have a much higher risk of their privacy being invaded
because of decreased ability to secure their information. The article above speaks
on the issue that almost any online movement can be traced or tracked by almost
anyone. Within the article it is shown that many people believe that with new
technologies, the country's privacy laws need to be updated and mass consumer
surveillance needs to be regulated and it is evident that this may be very
understandable given recent events regarding the NSA.
Source 5: After Paris, What We're Getting Wrong In 'Privacy vs. Security' Debate
"Dilemmas of the Internet Age: Privacy vs. Security." CNN. Accessed March 17,
2016.
This Article brings about a very interesting and important debate regarding security.
The article speaks on the tragedy that took place in Paris and how that terrorist are
using encrypted cell phone apps to communicate making tracing the information
nearly impossible. This is causing an issue because of encryption based on the
technology available to the US government and the Laws surrounding encryption
and private domains. During the attack in Paris, 129 people died and hundreds of
others were injured and similar incidents to this are what the United States and
many other countries are afraid of. The issue is that just like in Paris, There are apps
that are publicly available that can be used to encrypt communication making it
impossible for security agencies and other forms of law enforcement to track or
protect against. This issue is very important when it correlates to the safety of the
American people.

Order of my sources

The order of my sources is very specific in that there is a lot of reasoning behind it. I
started my security debate with security that is seen and in public light in regards to
the invasion of personal and physical privacy. Next I followed this by a regular
company arguing the legality of being asked to create a backdoor into their devices.
Followed by how the realization that the United States government spies on its own
people in order to keep them safe. After I used an article about the basic dilemma
revolving around the debate of Privacy vs Safety. My final source is a very important
one because it shows a major reason why some of the privacy invasion is necessary
in todays world. Many people dont realize just how real the3 threat of a terrorist
attack is and how helpless we really are as a nation in fighting this kind of an attack.
There are very few ways that these attacks can be avoided, and sometimes the
invasion of privacy can save hundreds of lives. Sometimes not invading privacy can
cause hundreds of lives to be lost. The debate can go back and forth for ages but it
is a very real issue.
