Help Students Use

Their Power from Within

What is Self-Talk?
According to Psychology
Dictionary, self-talk is The
dialogue we have within
ourselves that can confirm
and reinforce both positive
and negative beliefs.

Main Aspects to Make Effective

Teach students that the words they

use and their attitude about
themselves or tasks have great
power.
Should be a class wide approach
because everyone can benefit.
Lead by example. Speak positively
about yourself and your abilities
Praise for positive self-talk and give
praise with a specific reason.
Acknowledge their effort when
giving critique or correcting
Encourage students to express
thoughts freely in journal writing to
organize them.

How Can Self-Talk Be Used as a Strategy in My Classroom?

Introduce positive self-talk in unison as a class

o When I turn cant into can, that means I have a plan!
Alter phrases to change a students mindset
o Im not good at this. becomes What am I missing?
o This is too hard. becomes This may take some time and effort.
o Im not good at math. becomes Ill train my brain in math.
After assignments ask students these questions to teach them how to find pride in their work
and how to evaluate themselves in a positive way.
o What is something you are proud of?
o What is your favorite part?
o If you do this again someday, what would you change.

Ways to Incorporate Everyday
