SHADOWING: LINDA MANDIGO

When I first walked into Linda Mandigos kindergarten classroom I thought it was very
well organized. All the students were in their seats and were working on a warm up for the
morning. This is something that happens with my older class but with my class that is closer to
the age of these kids fix hard to get them to sit down and do things on their own because of their
autism. It was also interesting to see that they all were working on the same worksheet because
most things that I do in my classrooms is level based.
After most of the students were done with their worksheets they then moved on to what
is called circle time in my classroom. This consisted of going through calendar, counting how
many days they've been in school, going over their weekly letter and their weekly words and
reading two or three books. Some students got very antsy sitting in a big group like that but all
Linda had to do was move them. Which was a little distracting to other students but overall all
the students were very well behaved.
From there the students moved into rotations. There were about five groups of kids with
two to three kids in a group and each had a line leader so when it was time to switch tables
everyone would stand up and each line leader would lead their group to their next table. Some
of the tables were just set up with toys for the kids to play with, one had tablets for them to play
learning games on and the last two were set up with teachers to help them learn more things.
Specifically Linda was teaching the kids a specific ending sound and would go through a
worksheet and the students would have to identify words with that ending sound. The students
also had a guest reader come in to read them a couple of books, which happened to be our
superintendent. I thought that was very cool to incorporate so much reading into these kids busy
schedules.
Overall I thought it was very interesting to get to compare my classroom to this one. In
many ways they are exactly the same but there are also so many ways where they are different.
For example, my students can't do very many things in full group because they need so much
assistance and there is never that many people to help. Also I loved that I could ask these kids
how their day was going or what they were doing after school and to get complete sentences
and so many details from them because that is very hard to get this with me special needs
students. The most important thing I noticed was that my classroom managment and everything
that kids taught in my classroom is so different.
