important.Thisiswhatinterculturalcommunicationmeanstome.Itisvery
importantasateachertoadapttoyourstudentscultureandunderstandthatevery
studenthasadifferentculture.Notadaptingcanmakeyourstudentsfeellikethe
learningenvironmentisnotasafeplace.

IdentifythesignificantresultsfromyourIDItest.Whatdoesthismeanaboutyour
currentlevelofInterculturalcommunication/awareness?

OntheperceivedorientationIwasa115.68,whichbarelyputsmeatacceptance.
ThisscoreindicatedthatIratemyowncapabilityinunderstandingandappropriately
adaptingtoculturaldifferenceswithacceptance,reflectinganorientationthat
recognizesandappreciatespatternsofculturaldifferenceinmyownandinothers
cultures.OnthedevelopmentalorientationscaleIwasa79.09,whichhasmeat
polarization:defense/reversal.My Developmental Orientation Score indicates that
my primary orientation toward cultural differences is within Polarization, reflecting
an us and them judgmental viewpoint toward cultural differences, that can take
form of (1) Defense, in which different values, perceptions and behaviors associated
with a culturally different group of people tend to be evaluated negatively and values,
perceptions and behaviors of my group are judged more favorably, or (2) Reversal,
in which other cultural practices are less critically evaluated and cultural practices
within ones own group are likely to be judged from an overly critical standpoint.
More specifically, my responses to the IDI indicate that 56 percent of my resolution
of Polarization perspective is more from a Defense view and 44 percent is from a
Reversal orientation.

i. I have had ample experience with diverse populations. I have taught
handicapstudentswithintellectualdisabilitiesatPCSandotherschools
inStocktonUnified.Ihavealsoworkedwithpreschool,middleschool,
andhighschoolstudents.Withthedifferentgradescomesdifferentskill
levels.
c) Wasthereadifferencebetweenyourperceivedandactualorientation?Ifso,
whatwasitandhowmightyouexplainit?
i. The orientation gap between my perceived orientation score and
developmental orientation score is 36.59 points. This means I
overestimatedmylevelofintercultural competence.Idonot have an
explanationforthis,itreallysurprisedme.
d) HowdidyoufeelwhenyougotyourIDIresults?Didtheysurpriseyou?
i. They did not surprise me too much besides the huge difference in
orientations.ItonlysurprisedmebecauseIofhowbigthedifference
was.
