Content Standard:
Choose ONE standard. Be
sure to write out the entire
standard, not just the number.

Learning Objective:

Anticipatory Set:

Choose ONE objective

that leads toward
mastery of the standard
Must be specific,
measurable, and
realistic.
Must have at least two
parts: learning and
behavior
Sometimes called a
"hook" to grab the
student's attention
Focuses student
attention on the
objective and the
purpose of the lesson
Activates prior
knowledge
Requires ACTIVE
PARTICIPATION from
ALL learners

Teaching-Input:
Using effective and varied
strategies, the teacher
provides information for
students to gain the concept,
strategy, or skill.

Pima Course: EDC 292

Topic: Fish Morphology

Grade Level:10-12 Duration of Lesson: 44 min.

Description of Plan
Strand 4, Concept 4, PO6 Analyze, using biological classification system (i.e. cladistics,
phylogeny, morphology, DNA analysis), the degree of relatedness among various
species.

Student will be able to draw the cross-sectional shape of several differently

shaped fish and describe their swimming behavior and habitat (based on their
shape) on a worksheet with at least 75% accuracy.

Bell Work Question

Thinking about the different shapes of fish, what two things are affected by a fishs
shape?
Three very short videos from www.youtube.com:
1. Shows a Flounder swimming
2. Shows an eel swimming
3. Shows an eel in its habitat

Instructing students using a figure from the text, Marine Biology 8th ed. (Castro), page
158, Figure 8.9, showing the morphological differences between species of fish and their
cross-sectional shapes.
Instructor will also discuss how the shapes affect the swimming behavior of the fish.
Finally, instructor will discuss the habitats of some species of fish with the students,
based on the fish morphology.

Students will look at the picture from the Marine Biology Coloring Book, (Niesen),
displaying body forms of various fish. Students and instructor will discuss how this
relates to cross-sectional shape.
Demonstrate and show

examples of what students

Guided Practice:

Worksheet on Fish Morphology is the activity for guided practice

An opportunity for each

student to demonstrate new
learning by working through
an activity or exercise with the
teachers guidance.

Closure:

Students will write a five minute Reflection about what they learned in the lesson.

Actions or statements

students that summarize
lesson objectives.
Essential for helping
students integrate ideas,
make sense out of what
has just been taught,
and to improve their
chances of retention and
transfer.

Independent Practice

Independent Practice:
AFTER proper closure, it is
important to provide time for
additional practice. It may be
group or individual work in
class or it might be
homework.
